I'm not sure what happened, but after I posted my entry I explored other parts of this memorial page, and now my message seems to have vanished. Perhaps it was sent, I can't tell.
If it was lost please let me know, as I'll gladly repost it.
All best,
Joseph

This reminder arrived in my email box on the 12th of October, but I didn't read it until today, the 16th, as I only check this once a week, due to failing vision. We were close in age, about 7 yrs difference, and I always felt he was an enhanced version of what my older brother would be if I had one! Now I feel that we (and I include Elizabeth as well) were members of an extended family that stretched from lower British Columbia to the Sacramento Valley.
It's curious that I was thinking about both him and Elizabeth recently, wondering how she and their sons were doing. I wish them well, but I'm especially concerned for Elizabeth, and send her my deepest wishes for her well-being and happiness. I'd love to get an email from her, with a photo if possible, so I can send her a prayer with that in mind.
Such dear people are rare enough in life, but to have two at the same time is a double blessing. May Heaven continue to care for her and the family!

Professor Shattuck was a history professor beyond compare. I often wrote extensive essays on American History in his class ("American History Since 1865") and he would also write lengthy responses right on my paper, discussing the topic at hand and lending new insights and new approaches that made history come alive. He is someone I will never forget, even after all these years.

My grandfather was a kind man who always had a story to tell, whether it be a history lesson or a tale from his many adventures. I always loved his white beard, his jackets, and how he always seemed so wise. Sometimes I can still smell him, he had such a distinct smell that I found so comforting. I believe that his biggest gift was sharing his love of reading and history to his family. I know he had an impact on many lives some small some large. It makes me smile to read messages from other people he touched in some way. He was my GF and I miss him.

Pete was my favorite professor ever, the most inspiring, the most demanding, and the most encouraging. His methods stayed with me and I use them to this day even though it has been 40 years. I'm very sorry to learn of his passing. My condolences to his family.
Adieu, my friend!

I came across Peter's obituary while doing research for a friend who is a Dr of US Military History at UofCal at Berkeley.
I first met Peter & Elizabeth as clients when they lived in Berkeley, and they became dear friends. I later visited them in their wonderful new house and home in Sacramento, where I experienced Tolkien for the first time when they asked me to read the Hobbit to their sons. Many magical moments with them, always wonderful, good friends!
My heart goes to Elizabeth and her family.

Peter was on the Friends of the CSUS Library for many years and a fine President. He knew a great deal about his former students and enjoyed sharing their scholarly work.

Farewell and God speed to my old prof.
All of my time with him in class and my sporadic visits with him out of class were marked by his humor, wit, insight and charm.
My condolences to his family.
