Evelyn Schaffer Obituary

Evelyn Hoffman Schaffer, 90, of Salisbury passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. She had the privilege of raising 7 children that she loved deeply. Born July 6, 1930 in Emmaus, PA, she was the daughter of the late Minnie Victoria Laudenslager Hoffman and Morris Franklin Hoffman. Mrs. Schaffer graduated from Emmaus High School, Class of 1948, St. Luke's School of Nursing, Bethlehem, PA, Class of 1951, received her Master's in Education from Syracuse University and a degree in Public Health Nursing from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. She was Director of Nursing for the Rowan County Health Department for 25 years before retiring in 1994. Mrs. Schaffer was selected as one of two nurses from North Carolina as a “100 of the Great Nurses” in 2002. She served on the North Carolina Board of Nursing. A member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, she served as a Church Elder, Past Clerk of the Session, Past Mediator for the Women of the Church, a member of the Church Choir, the Hand Bell Choir, member of Altrusa, the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, the White Shrine and the LOL Card Group. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don Clifford Schaffer on September 21, 1998; brothers, Herman Hoffman and Morris Hoffman; sisters, Helen Landis, Francis Landis and Arlene Bittner. Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Andrea Billings and husband Dennis Kobes of St. Germaine, WI, Cynthia Billings Roan and husband Bill of Oakland, CA, John Billings and wife Tammy of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Albert Billings and wife Janice of Salisbury, NC, Susan Schaffer Wilkey and husband Russell of Spencer, NC, Ann Elliott and husband Robert of Salisbury, NC, and Carol Schaffer Salisbury, NC; brothers, Howard Hoffman of Cary, NC and Arthur Hoffman and wife Shirley of White Hall, PA; grandchildren, Minetta, Avery, Ryan, Logan, Princess, Jason, Steven, James, Brian, Erica, Kenneth, Thomas, Brandy, Kristen, Misti, Joshua, Amanda, and Ethan; twenty three great-grandchildren. Service: The family will receive friends from 12-1:30 PM Saturday (Feb. 27) at Franklin Presbyterian Church followed by the funeral service at 2 PM with the Rev. John Elam, officiating. Entombment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum. With COVID restrictions, you are asked to please wear a mask and social distance. Evelyn was a dear friend and fellow member of The Carolina Artists. She was always positive and a joy to be with. We shared many long talks, laughs, pleasant visits and phone conversations. It was a great privilege to call her my friend.
