Lacee Harris Obituary

Lacee Alan Harris
1944 ~ 2020
Lacee Harris passed away in his home on August 6th, 2020. After many rounds of cancer he completed his journey to the spirit world peacefully. Lacee was born on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation in Fort Duchesne, Utah on June 29th, 1944, to Albert H. Harris and Lucille D. (Sanchez) Harris. He was the oldest of five children.
Lacee is survived by his wife of 26 years Molly Prince, his children Brenna (Bill), Bron (Sherry), and LaDonna (Chad); his step-children, Chad and Shayne (Tracie) Champneys; his grandchildren Maya and Ella, and his step-grandchildren Zoe, Jayden, Saygen, Kohyn, Rylen, Brianna, and great granddaughter Opyl. He loved his grandchildren deeply. Lacee was preceded in death by his first wife Alberta Acothley from Coconino, Arizona.
In 1968, Alberta and Lacee graduated from BYU and got married. Then Lacee earned his first masters degree in public administration. In 1973, Lacee became the University of Utah's Indian Education Advisor for the next 14 years. He received awards for Man of the Year from Native American students and Chicano students. He was also involved in designing the University of Utah's current logo. The logo, as Lacee explains it, is the circle of life with the eagle feathers attached. The feathers represent the eagle who takes our prayers to the creator. He used to bristle when he heard the logo described as a drum and feather.
Lacee went back to school and earned another master's degree from the University of Utah and became a licensed clinical social worker. His social work career included working in elementary school social work, child protective services, and youth corrections. He later began serving adults and became a mental / behavioral health therapist at Valley Mental Health and then at Weber Mental Health. He finally retired from behavioral health / substance abuse counseling from the Indian Walk In Center in 2011, but he still did consulting when available.
Lacee was seen as a community leader and was very involved in Native American awareness. He served as the pow-wow committee chairman at the Salt Lake Indian Walk In Center in the 1980s for 5 or 6 years, and he was an MC and spiritual leader for pow wows all over the state. He was an active member in the Four Corners Gourd Dance Society. For a few years, in the late 1970s and early 80s, he had a TV show on KUTV called Indian Affairs. For some years, he also hosted a radio show on KRCL. He served on the Board of Directors for the Indian Circle Center in Ogden for three years. For the last ten years he sat on the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable.
Lacee did Native traditional consulting work and ceremonies for 50 years, which includes weddings, burials, and cleansings. During his retirement and until 2020, Lacee volunteered his services as a chaplain for Native services at the Utah State Prison and at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Towards the end of his life Lacee, asked if he did enough. The answer to his question can be seen in the outpouring of love seen from his family, extended family, friends, colleagues, clients, and students. He has had so many prayers sent to him, including for example a letter sent from caring inmates he mentored at the Utah State Prison. He has touched the souls of thousands. Lacee will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 22nd from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City. To ensure compliance with current social distancing guidelines, we kindly ask that you call the funeral parlor at 801-474-9119, between the hours of 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, to make a reservation for the time you wish to attend. Have thought of you often. I attended his "circle of life" group at Weber Human Services. The first time we met was years earlier when you opened a ceremony at Weber State University. You opened the ceremony carrying my Uncles warriors staff. Little did I know that years later I would have the pleasure of being in the group you instructed. We use to joke around giving each other a hard time. You gave me the name of Wondering Butterfly". On those days that you were struggling with cancer the other counselor would ask if I would help cover the group for you. It was my honor to try and help. I asked for your advice one day and we met in your office. You being a holy man for the Ute tribe and I a daughter of a woman adopted by a Lakota family from the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe.I had just returned from Eagle Butte SD where my mom and siblings had attended our naming ceremony. We discussed acceptance and by the end of our talk you told me that I was on the right road the red road. I never personally got to thank you for your help and wisdom before I left to continue on with my life. Now, years later find myself living on the reservation where you were born. Lacee you will always have a special place in my heart. Much respect.

Wow Lacee, I can´t believe you are gone when I read the obituary. I thought about you and our relationship working at Valley Mental Health when you would cleanse the office at work. You were truly a great friend and I loved working with you. I know that others and your family miss you. RIP

I had the honor and privilege to work with Lacee at the Indian Walk In Center and like so many, he indelibly touched my soul. He was a friend, a mentor and at one point, my therapist for a hard situation. Lacee handled life with a quiet grace which soothed my soul and touched my heart in a way that am angel does. I miss him. Molly, my heart goes out to you.

I am fortunate to have met Lacee when I was a teenager. I have always admired his ability to perpetuate his peoples heritage and customs in time when everything seems to try and dilute them. He was a good person to have around, he made you a better person with out you realizing. My kids were fortunate to have been blessed by Lacee and I am thankful for all the blessings he has given our entire extended family. I will miss you Lacee, but I am forever grateful our paths crossed and for them memories I have. Thank you for being you.

Lacee was one of our spiritual care volunteers at Huntsman Cancer Institute, and he was already a volunteer when I arrived, so it has been my honor to work alongside Lacee as a volunteer for my entire 6 years here. We visited many times when he came up to see a patient, and I deeply valued those conversations. Lacee had a deep soul, a sharp wit, a no-nonsense attitude and little tolerance for injustice. I will deeply miss him and greatly appreciate his time with us. Thank you Lacee. You are beloved wherever you go and are missed by many. Chaplain John Cooper

I didn't know Mr. Harris personally, but after reading his obituary I discovered something about him that I'm extremely grateful for. I've been a University of Utah fan for over 30 years. The relationship between the university and the Ute tribe has been very special to me. I'm proud to be associated with the Utes. One of the things I love most is the Utes logo. Something about its design has always intrigued and captivated me. I'm thankful for the part Mr. Harris played in its design. Before I read his obituary I didn't know about the special meaning behind the logo of the "circle of life" and symbolism of eagle feathers taking prayers to our creator. The logo means even more to me now. Out of respect for the designers of the logo, I will no longer refer to the logo as the "drum and feathers". May our creator be with your family, I'm sorry for your loss.

So saddened by this news. Lacee was my uncle. We did some great work at the University of Utah and at the Indian Walk-In Center. I was recently in SLC and he kept coming into my thoughts. I can still hear his laugh and see his smile.

Our origins help us understand our purpose on earth and our eventual destination when our spirits leave Mother Earth. Journey well my uncle your medicine was good and healed many of us, you will be missed.

I have had the great pleasure of knowing Lacee for almost half a century. He was my boss, a great mentor to Natives as well as non-Natives. He had an infecticious laugh and great wisdom. He never forgot anyone. No one ever forgot him!! He ways asked about my eldest son and how he was doing. He was an outstanding example of a role model. He will surely be missed by a lot of people. My sincerest condolences to his family. May he rest in love and peace.

I have so many great memories of Uncle Lacee from when I was a little girl. His spirit, his strength, and his humor were contagious and uplifting. He was in the hospital room when my aunt passed away a few years ago and provided so much comfort & peace to our family. His blessings will never be forgotten. But most of all I will never forget his laugh. When you heard it you couldn't help but smile and laugh. Lacee you were a true role model and will be missed. Sending all of my love & light to your family. Love you Brenna, Bron, LaDonna, Molly & the rest of the crew. Please let us know if you need anything.

Much Love - XO -
