JAY VAN NOY Obituary

Jay Lowell Van Noy 1928 ~ 2010 LOGAN, UTAH: Jay Lowell Van Noy, 82, passed away peacefully November 6, 2010, at his home in Logan, Utah, after a long and valiant fight against Bacterial Endocarditis. He was born November 4, 1928 in Garland, Utah to Charles Lowell Van Noy and Ada Day Van Noy. Jay married Sue Simmons on October 19, 1956, in Twin Falls, Idaho. Jay graduated from Utah State University in 1950. He is best known for his athletic prowess in several sports namely football, baseball, basketball and track and field. Jay was the last surviving member of the 1946 North Cache Bulldog State Championship Basketball Team. At the age of 16, Jay was given the opportunity to play professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals organization starting in Pocatello, Idaho and working his way through the Cardinals farm system all the way to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he had the opportunity to play baseball with Stan Musial, Enos Slaughter and the rest of the "Gas House Gang." After his professional baseball career, Jay went on to coach baseball at BYU, where, he led the Cougars to two conference championships and in 1958, he was voted NCAA Coach of the Year in District 7. Once Jay's playing and coaching career ended, he moved to Logan, Utah where he was the Logan City Parks and Recreation Director for 15 years. Jay was also heavily involved with the Northern Utah Chapter of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association serving as President for several years. This association provided scholarships to high school seniors for college and put on baseball clinics to raise funds for youth baseball teams. Jay was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, golf, camp, and go to Aggie sporting events, especially in the fall and winter. Jay is survived by his wife of 54 years, his loving children, Mike (Becky) Van Noy, Debbie (Chris) Sandoval, and Sonja (Bryan) Fraser and six grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lowell and Ada Day Van Noy, and sister, Lois Garrett. Jay impacted many lives and he will be greatly missed. We would like to give special thanks to all those who helped Jay in his fight, Logan Regional Hospital Extended Care Unit, Logan Nursing Rehabilitation Center, Logan Hospital Infusion Center, Intermountain Health Care and especially Dr. Michael J. Stones. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 12:00 noon at the Lundstrom Park, 3rd Ward Chapel, 1260 North 1600 East, Logan, Utah. Sonya,
My condolences to you and your entire family for the loss of your father. Although I haven't seen you since high school, I think of our time together fondly. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Van Noy family,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of Jay Van Noy. The sad news came by way on an e-mail from Utah and I went to the Internet for confirmation and details. I cared enough for him that I knew, respected and appreciated more and more as the years passed. I saw him pla basketball at North Cache High but must admit my young age make this a limited remembrance with few details. I had a few chances to watch him play football for the Utah State Aggie and for me he was the best player on the field. At one game I can distinctly recall he broke away on a long run for a touchdown when all of a sudden he dropped the ball and without much change in his running stride the ball bounced back upward and he grabbed it and ran in for the score. I followed his baseball career through "The Sporting News" baseball stats primarily while playing if I recall correctly the team at Rochester, N.Y., but I was listening on the radio when he played a game for the St. Louis Cardinal and I was so thrilled that everything else was put on hold until the game was over. The last time I saw Jay was at my brother's funeral but his bright smile and pleasing humor and manner were again ever
present and treasured.
Jay was more than quite a guy, athlete and friend but a great human being.
Sincerely,
Larry D. Christiansen, Kernersville, N.C.

Dear Van Noy Family,
Dave and I were so sorry to hear of Jay's passing. Dave will miss seeing him @ church and walking on the Logan River Golf Course. I have many different memories of your family including the large tortoise you had. We would keep letting him out and Debbie you always took the cause of that for us. I think that the 7 of us girls did that at each of our own homes. I remember spending so much time in the "cool" basement that Jay fixed for his family and we all enjoyed. The jukebox was so great to learn dances to and I know that we all had a great time. We have had 4 deaths in our family in the last year so we kind of know what you're going through and I would advise you that everyone grieves in a different way so respect that and remember the good times you spent with Jay and don't let any negative creep in those thoughts. I will miss seeing Sue @ church because we have now moved but we wanted you all to know how much we thought of Jay.

To the extended Van Noy family: I simply ached when I read of Jay's passing. My Dad, Herm Fonnesbeck, thought the world of Jay and was so thrilled that one of his favorite "Cards" was coming to Logan to run the youth sports and recreation programs. I see my old LHS teammate and friend Steve Baugh wrote in about "Uncle Jay"...I wish I had lived in Logan longer at times (been in St. George since 1974) because I know I would have gotten to know Jay even better. As it was, I will take the memories of Jay correcting my pitching motion a bit here and there, allowing me to at least be on the level of a Logan Pony League All-Star, and while Steve Baugh may have a baseball signed by Jay, I have one of the first All-Star certificates he ever signed in his position at Logan City. I have cherished it since the evening Jay gave it to me. A genuine hero has left us...and not just me, Steve Baugh or a Jim Laub benefited from all Jay did for us...he helped kids from all parts of the valley, some who didn't even know he once ran 82 yards from scrimmage with a football, or gained 221 yards in a single game! As for me, I still love the Cardinals, partly because my Dad adored them, and mostly because I shook a real Cardinal's hand more than once. Heaven will be a better place with Jay up there, hitting lefty fungoes to those who still claim to be "The Boys of Summer,"

Van Noy Family - Sorry to hear of Jay's passing. I will never forget his loving encouragement throughout my young athletic years in Logan. He always had optimistic words to say no matter how I played. I will always remember him calling me "Lefty". He was so charitable to me. I can't count the number of times he would see me at JB's and when I went to pay the bill he had already paid it for me. I will never be forget his great kindness.

Dear Mrs. Van Noy -
As heavy tears run down from my eyes, I just found out the sad news. I am Billy Staples the kids writer for baseball n I spoke with you at your home last month. You sent me to the care center to go sit n chat with Jay. Words can't express how much fun we had n how much laughter was in the air. We took a picture together n he said he wanted to comb his hair n I insisted - I liked it being a mess n kids wear their hair a mess on a daily basis these days. I will send a copy of the picture n a copy of my best selling baseball book - Before the Glory - may these 2 things always bring a smile to your face.
Much respect n sadness - Billy Staples

Dear Sue and Family - I had the privilage and honor to be a member of the 1958 BYU baseball team ( sorry Mike) coached by a guy who has always been one of my heroes - Jay Van Noy. We all have had people in our lives who have helped to set a good example to live by and your husband/dad/grand - pa was one of those people. You are in our prayers.

Dear Sue and Family
Uncle Jay,as I always referred to him, will always be remembered in my heart for the encouragement he gave me in sports, and that handsome warm smile of his and rare humor! Jay, as a Commissioner with Logan City started the LIttle League football program 1st with Flags then grew into the full contact leagues so many in the valley have enjoyed. Jay was 1st to upgrade the little leagues with other than Levis and tea shirts (Uniforms). And many might remember Al Lewis's 1st broadcasts of sports was a Logan City Little leage All-star game from Crimson Field! Jay showed many aspiring athletes in the valley they could succeed in Major College or professional Sports. I actually own a signed Jay Van Noy
Louisville slugger Baseball Bat I'd be willing to donate to USU Trophy Case if desired? His greatest tribute is the wife (Sue) he chose and terrific and beautiful Children. I will miss Jay Van Noy an awfully lot!

Sue: Please accept my condolences on the loss of Coach Van Noy. Jay was very important in my life as a player on the 1958 BYU baseball team. The counsel and advice he gave and the example he set prepared me for professional baseball. He was the only reason I attended BYU and I enjoyed being able to see you both during our recent team reunions.
