Donald Ray Zarkou
1931 ~ 2019
Donald Ray Zarkou, 87, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on May 10, 2019. Don was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 21, 1931, the youngest of six children. His parents, Christ Zarkou and Sigrid Johansen Zarkou, were both immigrants.
Don attended West High School where he played tennis and ran track. Don followed his three brothers in military service. He served in the Navy at Ford Island on Oahu, Hawaii during the Korean War. He was proud to be a veteran and was a true patriot.
Don married his sweetheart, Charlotte Watson, in 1955. Together, they raised six children. He worked as an electronic technician, as a benefits specialist, and finally as a budget analyst at the University of Utah. He was dedicated in providing for his family.
Don was an involved and supportive father and grandfather. One of his greatest joys was going to any event that his children or grandchildren were participating in, including dance, sports, and musicals. He was proud of his children and grandchildren.
Don taught by example. He never said an unkind word towards another person. He treated everyone with kindness and respect. He taught his family how to work hard and to value people more than things. He was friendly to anyone he met.
Don was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of 12. After his marriage and subsequent sealing in the temple, he served in several capacities in the church. He especially enjoyed serving as a valiant Home Teacher.
Don is preceded in death by his wife Charlotte Watson Zarkou and daughter Julie Ann Zarkou. Don is survived by his children: Brian Zarkou (Cathy), Stephen Zarkou, Donald B. Zarkou (Annette), Jeanette Hamilton (Jim), and Michael Zarkou; and by 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
