A few weeks ago I picked up my father's drawing table which was standing in the corner of his once upon a time shop, gathering dust. It is now in my bedroom, dusted and polished, but most of all, being used...It has brought back so many memories. I see my father working out ideas for his commercial...25 + years of memories...but tonight, I looked at it and was reminded of another memory from the past. Years ago, I use to baby sit Leslie, Michael, Dana and Jon. I explained to my wife how I loved baby sitting for the Maacks, mostly because I would go into Mr. Maaks studio and study his amazing drawings of Dinasours and body parts...I was reminded of his dinning room wall painted in black with an asian tree he had painted. I asked my wife to look him up on the internet, only to find that he had died.
What an amazing man he was...what an amazing influence he was... what an amazing husband he was...what an amazing father he was...what an amazing artist he was. Though I have not seen him for many, many years. Julian and his family have been an imortant part of the make-up of my life. I have never forgotten him...have thought of him often and wish I had told him these things. It is obvious by now that I just found out that he had died. I am very sad that he is gone and know that it must be difficult for his family...he was a great man.

TODAY I LEARNED OF JULIAN'S DEATH. I KNEW BETTE AND JULIAN INDIVIDUALLY AT FIRST-THEY WERE WONDERFUL AND DESERVED EACH OTHER. FRIENDS ARE THE TREASURES OF LIFE AND THEY WILL STAY IN MY MEMORIES. MY LIFE AT THE MED CENTERWAS BETTER BECAUSE OF YOUR FATHER.

Dear Leslee and Darius,
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. I believe I saw him only once, many years ago when we (Leslee and I)stopped at the Maack home for something.
In reading about him, especially in the guest book, he was a gentle, funny, kind and loving person. He has the remarkable gift of seeing beauty in the world which he shared through things such as his photographs and poetry. I may not have seen you both for years, but I do know he passed all those wonderful gifts/qualities to Leslee.
May you feel his love around you always.

I have always loved your folks. I have fond memories of visits with your dad.He helped my son so much with a love of running. I saw him at many races years ago as well. I appreciate the friendship we enjoyed and I am so sad your darling dad is gone. I will miss him. We will miss him at the dental office as well. Your dad was a kind, gentle man. My thoughts are with you!

A friend from the University sent me the notice of Julian's passing. I am so saddened to hear that he is gone.
Julian taught me more about life, honesty, justice & friendship than I learned from my own parents. I hold his friendship in my heart, and will always keep the memorable times with him forever.
Dana, John, Leslee & Michael, you are so lucky to have been blessed with two loving parents who could do no wrong. My prayers are with you now.

I first met Julian some 50 years ago when I was a pharmacology graduate student at the U and he provided valuable help with some illustrations for presentations. When I subsequently returned as a faculty member, we developed a lasting friendship over shared political views sprinkled with much good humor.
He was a wonderful photographer and I truly treasure an image he took of coastal trees in the morning mist that I received long ago as a birthday gift from my wife.
Julian was an extraordinary person and, like so many who knew him, I miss him already.

My mom worked with Julian for so many years, I was able to see some of his work and talk with him as a youngster. He intrigued me then and still does.

Julian started out as wonderful illustrator, became a patient, and ended up being a friend. I will miss him. I was unable to go on a planned trip to Scotland due to 9/11 and one day he appeared in my office with a beautiful, framed, photograph he took of a Scottish farmhouse - to cheer me up for missing my trip. He was a rare gem and the photograph is my treasure. My condolences to Bette and the family.

I worked for Julian as a illustrator during the 80's and I tought of him as a mentor and fellow artist. I was always struck with his insight and wit; and his friendship was sustaining to me. I extend my sympathys to Danna and family for your loss. Julian was a person of great integraty.

I shared many hours with Julian whether running, talking about running or admiring his artistic and photographic skills.
Julian was renowned for his Christmas parties at Medical Illustrations where he added a little something extra to the punch.Perhaps it is appropriate that he passed on Christmas Day.
He was a fine man and I am richer for having such fine memories of him.

Julian was a kind and gentle person and a wonderfully talented illustrator. I enjoyed working with him over 2 decades and have used many of his illustrations in scientific articles and book chapters I co-authored. Even after he "retired" from the department he continued to draw illustrations for me. He was a great friend & colleague and will be remembered fondly.

Julian was one of the first friends I made upon arriving at the University of Utah Medical Center in late 1983. I went to the Medical Illustration Department one day to ask for some assistance on a project - left with the beginning of a very enjoyable friendship. I always looked forward to visiting with Julian. Indeed, he and his staff were very helpful and there was always the bonus of Julian taking time to visit with you. He would tell me about his latest project and demonstrate an illustration technique. We would share our mutual interest in photography and running, social justice, and concern for local and world events.
It was not until I asked Julian to do a stylized drawing of John Glenn for a presentation I needed to make at the STS-95 post-flight science symposium in 1999 that I realized the Julian, like John, had been a veteran of the war in the Pacific during WW II and I sensed a certain pride in the connection he had just made. During a break at the symposium, I asked John Glenn to sign a copy of Julian's drawing for Julian. When John learned of Julian's mutual service in the Pacific, he was more than pleased to do so. When I returned to the U, I could not wait to give Julian the signed drawing. I shall always remember the look of delight on Julian's face upon seeing the signed drawing. It was the least I could do for a friend who had been so kind to me. Thanks, Julian!

While only knowing Julian for a short while, (after his retirement from Medical Illustration Dept.) - his presence was formidable; his talent and skill, undeniable. His influence continues to overshadow our dept of Medical Graphics & Photography. He was a stellar man. Wishing Dana and family kindest condolences for their loss. Julian is now with his beloved Bette - they are together once again.

When I was first interviewed by Julian for a position in his department, Medical Illustration Service in 1977, I knew then I wanted to work with and for him. I can honestly say that the 26 years with him and his staff have been the happiest and most fullfilling, and it was due for the most part because of the leadership, consideration and kindness of Julian. He taught me much of life and its beauty, and I thank him and will miss him greatly.

The world lost a champion of justice with Julian's death. Julian had an admirable way of bringing out the best in people; that's why his "Hallside Gallery" so enriched the family of the Medical School and hospital. Julian's high standards of professionalism made him an important collaborator to scientists at the University of Utah whom he helped communicate their scientific advances to the Medical community. The scientific community of the U. of Utah and his many friends and admirers will miss him immensely.

We're all richer for having known Julian. The twinkle in his eyes said as much as his common sense, gracious humor and wonderful artwork. Our deepest condolences to his family and other dear friends.

Julian was the most gracious and kind man I have known. He defines what a gentleman should be. I have such fond memories of our times together; be it running, discussing politics, or watching the wonders of nature that Julian would point out. I am happy that Julian is reunited with Betty but will have a large void in my life with his departure.

Julian gave me a priceless opportunity in his Medical Illustrations Dept in 1994. His high standards, grace under pressure, kindness, compassion for all, and professionalism helped me to not only be better at my work, but a better person. Will miss him much.

Julian was a true gentleman and one of the finest people I have ever known. He will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends. Fortunately, I have two beautiful photographs taken by Julian hanging in our home to continuously remind me of him. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
