Harold Wing Obituary

1940 ~ 2012
Harold R. Wing, loving father, entrepreneur, mentor and humanitarian, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Monday, August 6, 2012. He was born in Springville, Utah, March 5, 1940 to Ray Arthur Wing and Mary Marguerite Falkner Wing. Hal, as he preferred to be called, led a life dedicated to hard work and service to his family, business, nation, community and church. Hal and his wife Brigitte Mayer Wing raised seven children.
As a young couple with four young children (Art, Doug, Christina, and Heidi), Hal and Brigitte adopted his deceased brother's three children. Always a great example and teacher of a strong work ethic, Hal taught his children to be honest and to respect all people.
Hal held numerous positions in, and with his wife, served multiple missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With an unwavering belief in the gospel of Jesus Christ, Hal lived his life upholding its standards and principles.
As Founder and Chairman of the Board of Wing Enterprises, makers of the Little Giant Ladder Systems, Hal genuinely loved each and every one of his employees and they loved him in return. Hal also served in both Ronald Reagan's and George H.W. Bush's administrations as a representative at several national conferences on small business. He was elected Mayor of Springville, Utah, and served on the panel of the Mountainland Association of Government Regional Review Committee. Hal was named the National Republican Party Committee's Businessman of the Year in 2003 and again in 2006. He received the 2006 National Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernest & Young and the Business of the Year award from the Utah County Commission for his company's contributions to the Utah economy.
In October 2010, Hal became only the fourth person inducted into the Utah Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame. Hal served on the local Wells Fargo board of directors and regularly spoke at university and education institutions. In May 2011, Hal was awarded an honorary doctorate of business by Utah Valley University.
Hal always looked for people in need and tried to ease their pain. He lived his life with the belief where much is given much is expected. In addition to providing countless acts of anonymous service, Hal supported various charitable organizations including the LDS Church and multiple educational establishments and scholarship funds. He had a special place in his heart for the American Indian Services and Utah Highway Patrol's Honoring Heroes Foundation.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 11 at 11:00 am at the LDS Spring Creek South Stake Center in Springville, Utah (350 North 400 East). A viewing will be held Friday, August 10 from 5:00 - 9:00 pm at the Wheeler Mortuary in Springville (211 East 200 South). There will be no public viewing held on the day of services. The Wing Family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UHP's Honoring Heroes Foundation at

Always enjoyed watching Hal on his Little Giant infomercials. He had my interest all the way. I only seen Hal if my grandfather(Joe), my brothers and i would stop at my uncle Arts house for a visit on the way fishing or coming back. Hal was one of the nicest guys i know. Hal was a fun man to talk with. He was a man one would definitely want to hang out with.

You are missed,

Dear Brigitte - I am so sorry to hear that Hal passed away. Unfortunately, I read my Friday paper on Sunday. Even though we have not seen each other for many years - you both left a wonderful impact on my life. May the spirit of love and peace be with you at this time. With great love and sympathy. Hal lived an excellent life, really that´s all that matters. When you have your life in line with the Savior, death is moving to something greater and better.  Hal Wing was a man who gave his life and everything he had to the Savior. He really lived the gospel and especially the covenants of the Temple.  He was blessed with money and worldly fame, but he was one of the few in this world who used it to build the Kingdom of God here on earth. I am sure his welcome was wonderful and I can only hope to have as good of a welcome as he had.  I had a strong feeling that he would pass on while I was serving my mission. In a letter he wrote to me he said he was preparing to meet the Savior. I, too, am preparing and I hope that all of us are preparing also. I thought his last letter that he sent to me was very insightful.  After learning of his death, I read the letter.   At the end of the letter he says that he will see me when I get home.  I will live my life in such a way that I can return home to see him in the future.  I extend my deepest sympathies to all who knew Hal Wing, especially his family and his dear wife, Brigitte.  May our Heavenly Father send His Holy Spirit to comfort all in this time of parting.  I know that Christ lives, he broke the bands of death, death has no power!  I know that if we live the gospel in our lives and pattern them after the Savior that we will all have the privilege to see and be united again with Hal Wing.

Hal was a wonderful man who brought us so much joy whenever we saw him. He came into our lives when we needed him and he was a true blessing. My mother painted him years ago with his Porche and Harley, perhaps now she will paint him in Heaven with his angel wings! My condolences for your loss and may you find peace in sharing your love and memories of him.

So sorry to hear this. My brother-in-law has known Hal since fourth grade. Kay talks about Hal everytime we visit Springeville. I feel like I know Hal, but have never met him. Kay always had the nicest things to say about Hal. I feel a loss, because I knew this man, through the stories and comments regarding his character and generousity toward others. Hal was always so good to my sister and her Husband. My prayers go out to the family and friends and Hal's employees.

I am honored to have known a person as kind, thoughtful, and selfless as Hal Wing. He did a lot for my family that changed our lives in the most positive way imaginable. My prayers are with his family and friends as we all mourn his passing. We can also take comfort in the fact that he is in a much better place now continuing to be the charitable and generous Hal Wing we all knew in this life.

Hal, at our invitation - and at his own expense - visited our BYU-Hawaii campus, told his inspiring story in our Entrepreneurial Lecture Series, left us a ladder and made us all feel great about life and our chances to make a difference wherever we live if we will learn how to serve. We all knew we were in the presence of someone who was 'walking their talk' not just 'talking their talk'. He left an eternal impression on everyone who was wise enough to be at the lecture. Thanks for sharing him with so many of his fan club members.

Dearest Brigitte, family, and friends, Hal changed the course of thousands of lives and he changed ours, my whole family. Hal was the embodiment of Christ. I'm certain that the Savior was the first person Hal met when moving through the veil of the next life. Joshua Jensen was one of the greatest recipients of Hal Wing's kindness and the Lord used him to help Joshua get on a mission where he is serving now in Brazil. There are NOT enough words, nor good enough words to express our love to him and his family for what he did for Joshua Jensen. May his spirit come and comfort you, Brigitta, and help guide those he can still touch through the veil. I, personally, have never known the match of Hal Wing on my earthly sojourn. May everyone he touched reach out and help anyone we possibly can as the best legacy to his life.
