Peter Freed Obituary

Peter Quentin Freed
1921 ~ 2020
Salt Lake City, UT-Peter Quentin Freed, 99, left this earth in many ways better than when he came to it on August 29, 2020. He was born to Jasmine Young and Lester D. Freed on January 8, 1921, the youngest of five brothers. As a young boy, he did not like his given name, James Claude (Jimmy). Peter persuaded his mother to take him to the Salt Lake District Court to change his name to Peter. The process seemed to be going well until the clerk inquired what new middle name he wanted, to which a surprised, unprepared Peter blurted out, "Quentin". Recently, Peter described this pivotal childhood memory, "Quentin! What was I thinking?".
Peter lived his life in Salt Lake City, growing up in a home on South Temple, attending Bryant Jr. High, East High, and finally, after serving 4 years in Naval Intelligence during World War II assigned to the Commander of the Fifth Fleet under Admiral Raymond A Spruance, graduated from the University of Utah. Before leaving for the Navy, Peter married a Bountiful farmer's daughter, Cristie Wicker, whom he had met sharing their love of theater acting in a play at the University. Peter and Cristie had six children that became the focus of their lives.
With their young children, Peter and Cristie were not helicopter parents. However, Peter in particular established a close, best friends style bond with each young child which continued throughout his life. Most of every non-working hour was spent taking the kids to school, lessons, out to dinner, and on family vacations, particularly to the cherished cabin on the Weber River.
Peter was proud of his association with Lagoon Amusement Park, requesting that any telling of his story include some of Lagoon's history that he was instrumental in creating.
Returning from World War II with no employment prospects, Peter partnered with his brothers in a lease to operate the venerable Farmington amusement facility which, during the War, had been permanently shuttered. Lagoon then was small and in wretched condition, requiring noble commitment and unending hard work to re-open in May 1946. Less than 100 people came to the Park on opening day, but Peter and his older brother, Robert E. Freed (Bob), were thrilled. In late fall 1953, most of Lagoon burned to the ground. Refusing to give up, the Park was re-built to open on time, the next spring. Many, many years of hard work with meager return finally brought Lagoon, in the mid-1960s, to a stage that showed promise. Peter often remarked that the biggest mistake his oldest brother, David, made in acquiring the lease for Lagoon was not including a future option to buy the facility. For more than ten years, Peter, who was dissatisfied with the leasing relationship, drove the effort for the family to purchase Lagoon. The negotiations proved challenging and difficult. At one point, when the park owners offered a significantly improved lease, Peter's brother, David, in frustration, indicated the family would accept the offer. However, Peter insisted that the only way forward for the family and Lagoon was to reverse course, which, with the counsel of attorney friends Reid Martineau and John Gates, secured the purchase agreement in 1983. The bank loan to achieve this goal was repaid 25 years later. During this time, Peter was most pleased with his successful effort to bring Pioneer Village to Lagoon in 1976.
Under Peter's leadership, Lagoon rose to be a valued family recreation venue for Utah families, and become the largest family-owned amusement park in the country.
However, during the flowering of Lagoon, with Cristie driving, a horrific accident critically injured Peter and left Cristie in a coma for more than a year. When Cristie regained consciousness, Peter brought her home from the hospital to lovingly care for her until her passing eight years later in May 2006.
As Peter honorably proved his worth in business, he was loved and respected by Lagoon's associates and employees. However, Peter was first and foremost a family man, admired and adored by his children who are David W. (Luella), Howard, Michael, Kristen, Anne (Bob), Jennifer, and six grandchildren.
Peter was a beautiful person, a gentleman, and a source of joy and love to all who knew him. This is the obituary of a wonderful father, brother, businessman, leader and advisor; of a confidante, mentor, nurturer of relationships of family and friends; a kind, gentle, and modest man of integrity; a lifelong friend, loving husband, and family man.
There are no amount of words to sufficiently give summation to his life. We mourn his loss, and with time, will celebrate his life.
Our Family wish to acknowledge and express our profound gratitude to Peter's caregivers, Janina, Laura, Yolanda, Rufina, and Magdalena, one or more of whom was always by his side.
Peter was laid to rest with Cristie, as was his wish, by his immediate family.

Peter and his wife were one of the sweetest couples I ever met. They were so loving and supportive in a way that immediately impacted my life and career. I have such fond memories of them and am so sorry for your family loss.

I am so thankful for Peter Freed. He was a great blessing to me and my extended family. A caring, compassionate man who saw unique qualities in each individual. And, as a manager of people, allowed the individual to thrive and flourish. So many positive opportunities have been made available to me because of the earlier opportunities provided by Peter.

Successful son, brother, husband, father and friend. Graciousness to a fault. Empathy without bounds. Intuitive integrity - shunning bravado. Humility with tensile strength. An artist from the soles of his feet to the hair on his head. His only weakness of which I am aware was his penchant for Maddox with old friends, of which my father was one. I hope he did not have to pay every time;) Condolences from all of the Jensen Family.

Warmest regards and condolences to the Freed family for the loss of their dear father. I am part of a family who for four generations have worked for Peter and Bob at Lagoon, dating back to 1946. Both Peter and Bob were wonderful examples to me as I grew up working at Lagoon. I was just one of thousands and thousands of young people who have worked at Lagoon, and under Peter and Bob's direction, we learned to work hard, take responsibility for our area and to treat Lagoon's guests with respect and courtesy. These are lessons that have stayed with me my entire life. I have always admired Peter's creativity and quiet brilliance as he led and shaped Lagoon into the fun and wholesome place that it has been for so many years. Peter was always so kind to me and he always remembered my name even years after I had worked at Lagoon. Utah has lost a quiet and unsung hero who's life and work has touched so many lives. May we never forget Peter's example of kindness, patience, civility...and fun!
Much love to the Freed family

Dear Freed Family,
My deepest condolences to all of you during this difficult time.
What an amazing tribute to such a wonderful man who cared so much about family and making Lagoon such a success in bringing people closer with smiles.
This transferred into making Lagoon feel like home to me and making me feel like family while working there in games in the 80's.
My brother, Shaun Hansen, was so proud of what he was accomplishing while working at Lagoon as a rides division area lead, seasonal maintenance, and helping build Colossus. His tragic death at age 19 was so very hard for my family but we will never forget the kindness shown and words expressed to our family from the Lagoon family.
I will keep you all in my heart as I know that Shaun is greeting Peter with open arms and his bright smile.

As a childhood and lifelong friend of Michael and the rest of the family, I was richly blessed to observe Peter and Christie as they raised their family. Although viewed through the eyes of a child, now as an adult I can’t help but think back of the lessons I observed in the goodness and generosity demonstrated by those two people. Much love and gratitude to all of the Freed family.
Big hugs to all of you...Tony Romney

My siblings and I worked many summers at Lagoon in the '60s and early '70's. Peter and Bob were great bosses and so kind. I have utmost respect for both of them. My brother Ron worked there the longest and was a manager for a while. A choice Lagoon story for our family was the time Ron was asked to pick up Mary at Hotel Utah before the concert of 'Peter, Paul and Mary' that evening. Ron quickly complied. Wearing his orange jump suit, he climbed into his rundown, old '62 Rambler and drove to Hotel Utah to pick up the star. Ron escorted her to his car and asked her to slide through the driver's front door side as the passenger door didn't open. I'm sure Mary was used to being picked up by distinguished drivers in Limos, not sixteen-year olds in rundown personal cars, but she was most gracious. Meanwhile, back at Lagoon Peter and Bob wondered where Ron was and panicked when they realized he'd taken his old car because they had expected him to take Bob's Mercedes. They needlessly panicked because Mary was delighted by the unusual escort to her performance and thanked them for it. Ron, an affable sixteen year old, didn't get fired and Peter and Bob had a good l.augh with Mary. The hallmark of great leaders and performers is a sense of humor and graciousness. I cherish the privilege my siblings and I had of rubbing shoulders, so to speak, with Peter and Bob for a few years. Thanks for the memories. Peter will be missed by all who knew and loved him. -- Eileen Draper Telford, Previous Employee. P.S. Nine of us Draper kids worked for him.

Peter was one of the dearest people I've ever known. He and Cristie were true friends to my parents throughout their lives. Thanks to Peter and the Freed family for years of love and sharing. Growing up in the same neighborhood as the Freeds meant swimming lessons, the annual Neighborhood day at Lagoon and even horseback riding at their cabin.
Peter was especially important to my Dad in his last years. Nothing pleased him more than going to lunch with Peter and Janina. We were so lucky to have him in our lives.

I have several memories of dealing with Peter many years ago. He was indeed a great and wonderful man. He was someone that I could always trust to make wise decisions and someone that you could count on what he told you. In my dealings with Peter you could trust him. That means a lot.

I just wanna say that I really felt a close bond with Mr. Freed enough to call him dad. I didn’t know him tell his later years however that didn’t stop us forming a close bond as Peter is always open to everybody around. I felt that from him and I felt love from him. He will be greatly missed!!! I would also like to express my condolences to the family I know this is a hard one because he’s been the sole Totem pole in your tribe for a very long time. Although he is no longer with us his legacy remains. All of you can remember him through your memories. For me that is always made loss a little easier. It hurts my heart that I’m not able to be there with you all right now! Please be gentle with yourselves! Much love from me to each one of you!❤

Dear Kristen, Anne and the Entire Freed Family -
Growing up under the shadow of my sister Val, I could always count on a hello and smile from the two prettiest twins at Ensign Elementary, and all the years that followed. I have beautiful twins daughters of my own, with good looking grandchildren as well. Your family was such a part of Avenue Living and Traditions. I remember the Freed Auto Dealership, and of coarse Lagoon. I am so sorry for your loss, and the communities loss as well. But, your parents posterity carries on in the same proud tradition of excellence and love. God Bless! Sincerely Kevin L Smith and the LaMar & Gerda Smith Family
