Stephen R. Anderson A Good Man Stephen Richard Anderson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend died in the line of duty for the Utah State Department of Corrections on June 25, 2007 in Salt Lake City. Born to Moyal Peter Anderson and Ruth Karine Lewis on February 11, 1947 in Murray, Utah. Stephen grew up in Bluffdale, Utah and he stayed there to raise his own family. As a youth he earned his Eagle Scout Award, and he graduated from the old Bingham High School in 1965. After faithfully serving in the LDS Eastern states Mission from 1966 to 1968 with President Boyd K. Packer as his mission president, Stephen attended Weber State and LDS Business College. In 1970, Stephen began serving his country for six years as a reservist in the United States Marine Corps. He worked at Kennecott Copper for 15 years before he joined the Corrections Department where he had been working for the last 22 years. On August 19, 1971 he married Mildred Crowther of Malad, Idaho, in the Salt Lake Temple. Stephen and Millie raised five children, and at present have 16 grandchildren. Besides having been a missionary, Stephen fulfilled numerous other callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including High Counselor, member of the Bishopric, High Priest Group Leader, stake seventy, scoutmaster, and faithful home teacher. His fondest callings were those which involved the youth. Many people can bear eloquent witness that he lived his life to serve others for they were the recipients of his goodness. Stephen loved the outdoors and nature, and his abundant energy and enthusiasm for this interest kept him in top shape. Most of his free time was centered around his family; much of that was spent at his mountain property, four wheeling, hiking, playing with his grandkids and working with his bulldozer. Many people have lifelong memories of wonderful, adventurous outings there. Stephen is survived by his wife; his children: Shawn (Jackie) Anderson, Sherrie (Allen) Hardy, Lisa (Will) McCloy, Melanie (Bryan) Stewart, and Michelle (Ted) DeHaan; his step-mother Shirley G. Anderson; brothers and sisters: Jan Haines, Greg Anderson, Jerome (Linda) Anderson, Angie (Chris) Miasnik, Paula (Lee) Nielsen, Kathy (Quintin) Adair, and David (Sherry) Anderson; his 16 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Stephen was preceded in death by his parents and sister Pamela (Kerry) Coop. Visitation will be held at Broomhead Funeral Home, 12600 So. 2200 W. in Riverton on Thursday, June 28th from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29th starting at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning one and a half hours prior at the Bluffdale Stake Center, 14400 So. 2742 W. in Bluffdale, with Bishop Ray Joos conducting. Interment will be at the Bluffdale City Cemetery. The Anderson family is grateful to all who have expressed their condolences, support, and love. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the name of Stephen Anderson at any Zions Bank branch.

Dear Anderson Family and the SLC Police Department,

I was touched to hear of Mike's tragic death from my old friend, Nori Huntsman. The picture she's painted of him, as well as the tributes I've read in this guest book create for me the image of a dedicated, loving man with a love of the law and the strength to enforce it effectively. I offer my condolences for this great loss.

Dear Anderson Family:
It's people like you that make up the "amazing" Bluffdale community. You are such great examples to all of us. Thank you for touching our lives in such a positive way. Thank you for setting the bar so high in how we live and treat others. Many people know Stephen as the hero that he is. More importantly, he was always true to himself and his beliefs. He was such a Christlike example to all. The entire ANDERSON family are the same...they too are true examples and heroes and it is an honor to know you.
We send our thoughts, love, and prayers daily in your behalf.

Dear Steve,
There are some things a person cannot say, for whatever foolish reasons. Now I wish I would have. I felt privileged to work by your side. You taught me true leadership by way of integrity. In your presence, I stood a little taller, held my chin a little higher and saw life a little clearer. For that, I will be eternally grateful. If there is but one word I would use to describe you, it would be "reverence". I THINK YOU ARE ONE OF THE LORD'S CHOSEN FEW AND HE NEEDS YOU NOW. I will see you in my day to day thoughts and hopefully be able to thank you personally for what you have done for me. I recall looking at you every morning and thinking to myself, 'Millie must be one of the Lord's chosen few for this man to love her so much'. I offer my prayers for Him to ease your family's suffering at the loss of you and I hope they find comfort in knowing that you have touched so many lives in a way that no other could. Something about you brought out the best in me, and I noticed it in others around you, too. You are someone that everyone wanted to impress. When we were in the Academy together, I knew you were destined for great things. I will carry myself a little stronger out of respect for you and hope that I never lose that sense of peace I had when you were around.

Thank you Stephen

Dear Anderson Family,
I learned about the death of Elder Anderson on the internet. We were missionary companions in 1967 in Connecticut. I have read the many tributes about him and they are right on. All of the wonderful tributes describe the same man I served with 40 years ago. May the Lord keep his memory alive in the hearts of all who ever knew him. Your family will be together forever.

Dear Millie
I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. I haven't seen you for so long - you were my mutual teacher when I was a young woman, and I loved you so much. I still have the butterflies we painted in young wonmen's for a mother's day gift still hanging in my parents home. You were a wonderful example to me, and touched my life forever.
I am so sorry for the loss of Stephen. I remember you all as a very happy family. I am so grateful for the knowledge that we will all be together again someday. Families are the most important thing in life and we can be together forever. Thanks for being a wonderful influence in my life. You and your family are in our prayers.

Dear Anderson Family,
I serve with Steve in the transportation unit, he is a friend and mentor to me and many others in the department. Steve served the public with honor and courage. Steve gave the ultimate sacrifice protecting the people of this state, he is a hero to us all. His fellow officers are proud that we were given the opportunity to serve with such a great man. We will continue the work that Steve loved so much with the knowledge that our brother is in heaven watching over us. I am very sorry for the loss that your family has endured. Steve and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

I was driving to an appointment today in Murray, Utah, and couldn't help noticing how may flags were being flown at half-staff, obviously in tribute to Steve. What a wonderful legacy to and for the Anderson family. I lived in Bluffdale for many years and remember what beautiful and kind people Steve and Millie were and are, the kind of people you want to be around and associated with. My heart is broken for the family as a result of this senseless tragedy, but I know that all will eventually be well and that some day they will be together again for all eternity because of the promise of the Gospel.

Dear Millie and Family;

My husband served with Stephen on the High Council for years. We were in the same ward as Dave before we even met Stephen. Their parents must of been some very choice people. I don't ever remember passing Stephen (even after Kraig was released from the High Council and put in as Bishop} that he didn't have that smile on his face, a kind word to say, and a friendly hand to extend to me. Mille, we know that Stephen is in a much better place, out of pain and spreading his way of living his life with other people. It's the people he left behind (us) that go through everyday life with all the worries, stress, etc. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you especially at this time, and that we live down the road if you ever need a helping hand or just someone to talk to. Thank you for selflessly sharing Stephen with all of us.

My son is in law enforcement and I know the danger they are in every day. I know they are never appreciated for their sacrifice, but your valient husband WILL hear the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." How truly blessed we are to know that families are forever. Thank you so much for the service of your husband.

My Husband and I were so sorry to hear of your loss. Kirk was talking to me about how wonderful Stephen was. I would like to personally express my condolences to Ted and Michelle at this time. I knew that Ted was marrying into a wonderful family! May the Lord comfort each one of you at this time.

Dear Millie and kids,
I am so truely sorry for your loss; Stephen was such a great and kind man. I have great memories of your wonderful family, going to the property when I was in high school. He loved you all and it showed. Your family was always a good example to me. You are in our prayers.
