1940 ~ 2012
Bud D. Pate, age 71, passed away January 11, 2012, in Holladay, Utah. He was born May 23, 1940, in French Camp, California, to Bud W. and Norma Pate. He attended American Fork High and University of Utah. He married Joan DePew on June 14, 1975 and sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple in 1976. Our handsome, smart, loving Dad returned unexpectedly to his Heavenly Father and the love of his life, Christopher Bud Pate on January 11, 2012. What a wonderful reunion! Bud has always been a great athlete, exceptional at every sport. He loved to golf, rain or shine, and was Club Champion at Willowcreek Country Club and Jeremy Ranch. He was honored with 10 Gold Medals from the Olympics at St. George. He was proud of his Royal Scottish heritage, a dedicated genealogist, and meticulous in everything he did. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings. He adored and was so proud of his wife, children, and dog, Cocoa. His family meant everything to him! His claim to fame was that he made beautiful babies. He served in the Navy for four years on a mine sweeper. He was extremely bright, graduating with a Master's degree in Geography and taught at the University of Utah. He was a successful Realtor and Mortgage Banker. He had a zest for living, loving, and laughing. A former Mr. Utah, he always stayed in great shape. He will always be a huge part of our lives until we meet again, one sweet day. "We love you, Dad, give Chris a kiss and hug for us"!
Survived by his beloved wife, Joan; children, Troy (Stephanie), Teresa, Tamara (deceased), Christopher (deceased), Brittany, Alexis and Danielle; siblings, Pat Fox (Bill), Kay Pate (Jane), Sue Durrant (Lynn), Julie Blaney (Mel); eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, son, Christopher and daughter, Tammy.
Services will be held Wed., Jan. 18, 2012 at 12noon at Holladay 28th LDS Ward Chapel, 2625 Milo Way. The family will receive friends Tues., Jan. 17, from 6-8:30 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Dr. and 1 hour prior to the services at Holladay 28th Ward. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Pate's girls educational fund at Wells Fargo.

Dear Pate Family:
I am so sorry and express my sympathy of your Father's passing. He assisted me and gave me the privilege of getting Tammy's work ready and completed in the Temple. It was both an honor and joy to do this for my best friend Tammy who I dearly miss. Thank you Bud. And my prayers and thoughts will be close for your entire family.
With Love,

Joan,

We were saddened to hear of Bud's passing when we returned from a trip a few day's ago.
We have been honored to work with you and Bud for so many years. You were both true professionals in whatever you did. Not being great at the game myself, I always made sure that Bud was part of my foursome in every scramble I played in. He always came through. We hope you take great solace in the knowledge you have of the great plan of life. He will now be preparing things for you and your family. Bud always wanted the very best for you and was proud that you were his companion. We send our best wishes to you and your children. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Joan,
You and the kids are in our thoughts and prayers, we are so sorry for your loss and we will all miss Bud; he touched so many of our lives for the better. I will always cherish our time spent together enjoying the game of golf, from the trips to the Masters at Augusta, to Pebble Beach or playing at Willow Creek Country Club.
I will never forget golfing at Pebble Beach with he and Ricky when Bud hit his ball along a ledge that dropped off 200' down to the Ocean and while looking for his ball he disappeared before my eyes off the side of the cliff. As I ran over, I see his hand grabbing a clump of weeds pulling himself back onto the golf course from the ledge that caught his fall, with this look of panic yet relief that he was around for another day. He said “If I have to go I can't think of a better way than doing what I love to do”.
We had a good laugh over the years reflecting back on that trip and the many other experiences we shared. Bud was a master teacher and just about everything I know about the game of golf I learned from him. He would always say you can learn a lot about a person's character in the way they play the game.
Our love and support will always be here for you

Love, Steve, Chanin, James, and Julia

Joan, I just can't believe it. My heart is broken with this incredibly sad news. I have so many memories of Bud, This past week I have reminisced about all the experiences and discussions we had together, I just simply loved the guy! Every time we would see each other we would do nothing but laugh. Bud always had a new idea or a new story or some new great buy at Costco to tell me about. Bud loved to tease me and embarrass me in front of friends if he could, but it was part of the sport of our relationship. I cherish my "Masters" experiences with Bud, we had a blast every-time. When ever I saw Bud at Willow Creek, I would always go out of my way to go see him and give our "secret handshake" and talk about what was going on in each of our lives. I loved Bud for his brutal honesty and his moral compass. He had a very clear picture of what was right and wrong, Bud made me a better man! He was fiercely loyal to you and your children and loved you very much. I know how much he missed Christopher and wanted to be with him. I find great comfort in knowing that he is with him now. Love Little Ricky.

Joan and family,
Bud and Joan both were a great help to me when I was newly divorced, had three small children and they hired me to work with Envirowest Realty. It was a great time to work with such kind, caring and professional people. I also worked with Bud when he was a Loan Officer at Republic Mtg. and was always so impressed with his passion for life and his love of learning and family. I was fortunate to have known him and wish Joan and family kind thoughts for your healing.

Joan and the Pate family,

We met you and Bud at Willow Creek and immediately enjoyed a very personal conversation about your lives. That bond continued and I always enjoyed seeing Bud and sharing thoughts about almost everything. I will miss him and his unique views and thought provoking and heart felt comments. I know he was extremely dedicated to you, Joan, and to his twins and family. How he loved to tell me where he was off to with those girls. Bud had a big heart; I know you are missing him; and I also trust that you will be comforted now by your girls and friends and memories of him until you meet again.

Dear Joan,

I was saddened to read of Bud's untimely passing. While it's been 22 years since we moved from Utah I have followed with interest some of the twists and turns your life has taken. As with Chris's passing and now Bud's, your life has entered another difficult phase. I have no doubt you will triumph with a typical grace and fortitude you have so ably demonstrated in your life.

May the Lord be with you in this transition as He has so often in your past times of need.

You've experienced, more than most, one of the real conundrums of life. Death is always inconvenient. It either comes too soon or too late.

Best Wishes.

My Mom always told me it wasn't nice to have "favorites"....but, I made an exception when it came to Bud. For the past twenty seven years he has been one of my favorite Costco members. His stories and his financial advice and most of all the sharing of love for his family. Our most recent bond was our twins only a month apart. How I will miss those talks. As will the rest of his Murray Costco family. My heart goes out to all that knew and loved Bud.

Dear Aunt Joan and family, I am so sad at the loss of uncle Bud. His exit from this world came so sudden and it has had an impact on us all. I will miss seeing his smiling eyes and hearing his laugh and his even his uncomfortable lectures on how I need to get my ducks in a row. Everyone at Dr Jensen's office loved visiting with him when he brought the girls to their orthodontic appointments and even called him uncle Bud too. I'm sure that his reunion with those who have preceded him was a joyous one and one that he has looked forward to for years. I have faith that we will see those eyes, hear his laugh and maybe even hear a lecture or two when we meet again. Until then, rest peacefully uncle Bud. We will miss you! Love always, Natalie

Bud was an amazing man. He was always so kind to all of us at Costco. He is a man we could talk to for hours! He also understood the importance of business and understood when we had to cut it short. I always looked forward to Bud coming in to Costco so I could get his advice on my latest investment or home project. We will miss him dearly and always keep him in our hearts.

Joan & Family,

I was shocked to see of *Bud's* passing.
I remember You and Bud coming in to Mom's Cafe...Esther's Cafe.
The smile Bud always had on his face was contagious!
I remembered Pierre and I picked June 14, 1975 to get married...and you and Bud came in Mom's Cafe and shared that you both were getting married on June 14, 1975 also.
Boy, those were some fun days, back then. I sure do miss them!
My Mom passed away on December 1, 1997 and Pierre passed away on January 14, 1998 and Lynn, Mom's Love, passed away on January 28, 1999.
The last time I saw You and Bud, was at Wasatch Lawn when you both were putting flowers on the Grave of your Christopher, and I was putting flowers on Mom's Grave, and we ran into each other and we visited for a while. It sure was nice!
I will never forget Bud's heart, his kind words, his laugh, and his Smile...One in a million!
My heart aches for you, Joan...
I Pray that you will always remember the happy times and find comfort in those ~Precious Memories.
May the Lord Bless you and hold you close in the long days ahead.
Please know you and your Family are in my Prayers, as you travel a journey that no one asks to take.
Stay close to those you love.
I Pray that you may be surrounded by the love and support of Family and Friends, and the knowledge that one day, you will hold all of your loved ones in *Heaven* again.
Bud will be in your hearts forever.
I am asking for God's Love to surround You, and all of
Your Family & Friends, and grant You Peace at this time.

I am sending You, LOVE & HUGS and HOLDING...

I just talked with Bud at Costco a couple of weeks ago. He looked great as always, smiling and fun to talk to about old times. Bud and Joan took me under their wings back in 1978 at Envirowest Realty. For five years we worked together. It was great fun. Bud gave me my first set of golf clubs and taught me to play. I wasn't very good but he still encouraged me to play and he made it a fun experience. Joan, I can't believe this has happened. You have endured so many early departures of your loved ones. My love and prayers go out to you and your family. Troy, my little brother. Bud was busting his buttons when we talked about you last. You and Stephanie will always be a bright spot in my life. May God bless you all with comfort and love.
