Kathryn Finlayson Obituary

Feb. 14, 1952 ~ Aug. 2, 2014
Kathryn Jean Finlayson died on August 2, 2014 in Salt Lake City of heart failure.
She was born to Vernon A. Finlayson and Kathryn Peterson Finlayson on February 14, 1952 in Denver, Colorado. She studied art at Westminster college, mentored by Don Doxey, and graduated with an art degree in 1978. Kathy was a well-known Utah artist who conducted one-person shows and participated several times in group shows, particularly the Spring Salon at the Springville Museum of Art, also winning several awards. She is known for her oil paintings and also her line art. Kathy is still with us in her artwork.
Because of her kind, loving and almost childlike spirit, she was dearly loved by her family and her loyal friends, who have been a great strength to her over the years. She was an animal lover and had many dogs, cats and horses. She jumped horses competitively and won awards with her horse Cameo. Horses often played a prominent role in her paintings. Her dog Amos' paw print could be seen on her paintings. She took care of her mother for many years and she was a frequent visitor of older relatives. Kathy was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her brothers Dr. Keith N. Finlayson and wife Barbara of Salt Lake City and Dr. Paul A. Finlayson and wife Carol of Valencia, California.
Graveside services will be held at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Drive, on Friday, August 8, 2014 at noon.

I'm writing from the Springville Museum of Art. We were so sad to hear about Kathy's passing. We are such huge fans of her work. Partially in tribute to her life and work, we have hung one of her paintings in the permanent collection section of the exhibition "Fantasia for Fall" it will be up until Nov 2, 2014. The show opens tonight Sep 10 (the opening reception is 7-830 pm). All our condolences to her family and friends.

We were so sorry to hear about the passing of your sister. I was always impressed how you would take her to lunch and spend time with her. This is a tribute to her and to you.

Paintings were a window to Kathy's soul--rollicking rounded horses, pensive portraits, subtly colored landscapes, and her favorite subject, a road leading over and down hills with twists and turns leading to some distant destination we can only wonder about. She had such delight in bringing me the Springville Spring Salon catalog, which sometimes catalogued her road intertwining with those of others of Utah's truly talented professionals. Hers was a road less traveled, and she sometimes let me join her on it. How fortunate she was to have had the incredible support staff of Keith and Barbara. As she has perhaps reached that mysterious destination, my memories of her are framed in her landscape on my wall, and there's a sad and soft spot for her here inside. Godspeed, Kathy.

Sad news. I have such great memories of the entire Finlayson family and those days on Suada Drive. Hearing this about Kathy brought to mind her love of horses and animals. I have seen some of her works and will try to see more. My best to Paul and Keith on your loss.

Kathy was so loved by all of the Naughton family. I have so many wonderful memories of Kathy through the years. Kathy visited my mother faithfully when she was ill and always lifted her spirits. She was with us in the delivery room when my son was born. We had many wonderful vacations with her. Kathy had such a wonderful sense of humor, amazing talent and pure heart. She will be greatly missed.

Kathy's enthusiasm about almost everything in the world always made me pause to reevaluate my own view on things. As original a person as each of her paintings and drawings, she will be missed and I hope I can fill the hole in my heart with our shared memories.
