Gene Jacobsen Obituary

Dr. Gene S. Jacobsen St. George, UT Dr. Gene Samuel Jacobsen, a prominent Utah educator and author, and World War II survivor, died peacefully at his home Friday, May 25, 2007, surrounded by his family. He was 85. Jacobsen was the author of "They Refused to Die", his inspirational, personal story of being a prisoner of war in the Philippines and Japan for 3-1/2 years, after surviving the infamous Bataan Death March. In recognition of his book, he was awarded the "Top National Honor, Public Communications Category" in 2005 by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. He was born September 19, 1921, in Bloomington, ID, the son of Joseph Cowley Jacobsen and Ethel May Draney Jacobsen. Shortly after his 19th birthday, Jacobsen enlisted in the Army Air Force. After basic training at Hamilton Field, CA, he was sent to the Philippine Islands with the 20th Pursuit Squadron. He was with his squadron at Clark Field when World War II began in December 1941. With the American Forces, he moved to defend the Bataan Peninsula until the Philippines fell to the Japanese in April of 1942. Jacobsen survived the Bataan Death March, and from April, 1942, until July of 1944, he worked in several Japanese camps in the Philippines. He was then transferred to Kyshu, Japan, where he worked in a coal mine until the war ended in August 1945. Upon returning to the United States, he was reunited with his high school sweetheart, Barbara Perkins, who was a gunnery instructor in the U.S. Navy WAVES. The two married November 10, 1945, in Seattle, WA. The marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After an honorable discharge from the service, Jacobsen received BS and MS Degrees at Utah State University, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of California at Berkeley. He served on the faculty at University of California in Davis. At USU, he was the first Director of Edith Bowen Laboratory School, an assistant professor of Education, an associate director of the University Extension Service, director of summer school, and professor of educational administration. Then the couple's overseas' adventures began in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Jacobsen was a member of a U of U team that established the faculty of education at the Haile Sellassie I University. He was a UNESCO expert with the Singapore Ministry of Education, and superintendent of the Saudi Arabian International School System in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. At the U of U, Jacobsen was an assistant dean of the Graduate School of Education and Chairman of the Department of Educational Administration. At the age of 60, Jacobsen was awarded the rank of professor emeritus. He did not retire. He became executive secretary of the Society of Utah School Superintendents and Associate Executive Director of the Utah School Boards Association. Among his many awards were the "Light of Learning Award" from the Utah State Board of Education, and two "Outstanding Service Awards" from the Utah School Boards Association. Throughout his life, he was a sought-after public speaker and consultant. He shared his war experiences with more than 100 different audiences. He authored To Japan With Encouragement and Hope, Jed Dawson (a novel), Santa's Dilemma, and co-authored A Christmas Gift of Poetry with his grandson, Sam Vicchrilli. He also wrote many songs and poems. A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jacobsen served as a Sunday School teacher, High Councilman and member of two bishoprics. He and his wife served LDS missions in Zimbabwe, Africa, and in Tempe, AZ. Jacobsen found great joy in such diverse hobbies as hiking, fishing, gardening, cooking, singing and playing the guitar and banjo. He was a graduate of the Nashville Auction School. He and Barbara were best friends, constant and loving companions who traveled the world to share their educational expertise. Jacobsen was a strong advocate for the less fortunate, and always generous with his time and resources. He is survived by Barbara, his wife of 61 years; and their children, Dr. Michael (Pam) Jacobsen, Pleasant View; JoAnn Jacobsen-Wells (Joe Leverich), Murray; Sue (David) Vicchrilli, Murray; 12 grandchildren; brothers, Whitey, Forrest and Larry. Gene Jacobsen was one of my favorite professors at the U, and I had the good fortunate to work with him on a couple school accreditation teams. The night the Iran hostages were released, he told us the emotional story of the march and subsequent imprisonment. I don't think he'd done that with any group prior to that class; something had just touched him that deeply. He was such a fine man; I'm grateful I knew him. I know this is many years late, but I was reminiscing tonight and thought of him.

Dearest Barbara and family,
I was so saddened by the news of Gene's passing. What fond memories I have of the two of you when I was growing up in Montpelier. Gene's letter, as my advisor at USU is still an inspiration to me. He was not only my instructor, but my advisor in the education department there. His wonderful book was my gift to my siblings for birthdays last year. What a pillar of strength he was!
Barbara, you were my inspiration to even attend college and especially USU. How grateful I was for the scholarship that allowed me to do that. As the best English teacher in my life and the greatest supporter, as advisor to the Pep Club I still feel your influence in any leadership position I hold.

Friends and family are the greatest gifts we have in this life and I'm humbled to be one of yours.
Lovingly,
Winnie Mae Wright Freeman

Barbara: I have only met you a few times but have only heard and seen the good and kindness in you. You have remained kind and caring towards my mother, Laura Ostler. She tells only positive things regarding you and you family. May God bless you during this difficult time.

Dear Jacobsen Family:

I was sorry to read about your dad's passing. Having lost both my parents, I know the reality and the sadness of losing someone so close.

I have always admired and respected your dad and although I haven't seen him in a very long time, I have very fond memories of what a kind, caring and accepting person he was.

Al the best to you and your family.

Dear Jacobsen Family:
This is to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. Dr. Jacobsen was my graduate advisor when I attended the University of Utah and he was always very encouraging and supportive. I will never forget his kind words when I completed my Preliminary Examination. Ever since, his words have made an impact on me and today I am performing the role of graduate advisor at the University of Texas at Austin.
Although he has started the journey to heaven, he will always be present in your hearts and those of his former students. May God give you the courage to accept his departure. With respect .

I was saddened to hear of Dr. Jacobsen's passing. In the few short years I was acquainted with him and Barbara, I found him to be a very kind and gentle man. Barbara, I wish you hope and understanding of the Plan of Salvation. My love to you and all of you family.

Jacobsen Family:
We send our condolences concerning the passing of your husband, father, grandfather, brother, etc. I have known the Jacobsens for about 65 years. Gene's sister, Shirley, and I were classmates starting in the first grade at the Washington School in Montpelier, ID. Gene's brothers, Whitey and Forrest, both worked for my dad, John Schmid, at Schmid Bros. Dry Cleaning and Tailoring when they were in high school. Barbara, while Gene was the principal at Lincoln Elementary and Mike & JoAnn were pre-schoolers, taught English at Montpelier High School. Barbara, you were the best English teacher I've ever had. You drilled us on grammar and taught us how to write effectively; that has served me well throughout my life.
The last time we saw you and Gene was several years ago at the SLC library where Gene gave a most interesting talk about his war experiences. I've read a couple of Gene's books, and am amazed that he survived the ordeals he experienced. We will all miss Gene. I'm sure the family and all who knew him will take comfort in the memories we have of his long, productive, and well-lived life. It is our hope and prayer that all members of the extended Jacobsen family will feel the warmth of our Savior's love for each one.
Love,

Jacobsen Family: Dr. Jacobsen was on my doctoral committee twenty-five years ago at the U. of U. He was an inspiration to me and others then and has been throughout my career. He was such a rare combination of intellect, courage and humanity. The world would be a much better place with more like Gene Jacobsen. He will be deeply missed.

Barbara: We were saddened to hear of the death of Gene. I was looking forward to the end of our service in Belarus for 18 months to come to St. George and visit and to get his book. It was so nice to see you both in the SLC Library and to hear Gene speak so well, without notes. Our prayers and sympathy are with you. love Phillip and Joyce Kunz
