James Loftis Obituary

December 3, 1931 - February 7, 2016
FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- James Stewart Loftis, 85, a retired medical doctor, passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2016 after a long battle with dementia, with his family present.

Funeral: A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
Stewart Loftis was born in Royce City, Texas on December 3, 1931. He was the oldest child of Laborn Dudley and Mary Nell Loftis. Stewart grew up in Rockwall County, attended Rockwall High School, and was starting quarterback for the Rockwall Yellow Jackets. Stewart attended Southern Methodist University where he was a brother in the Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity. He proceeded to Southwestern Medical School and graduated in 1956.

After completing an internship at Methodist Hospital in Dallas, Dr. Loftis served as a captain in the United States Air Force. He listed his top three choices for deployment as Hawaii, Germany, or Japan, and was immediately sent to Lubbock.

After two years in the service, Dr. Loftis moved to Odessa and began a successful private practice in family medicine in 1959. He moved to San Antonio in 1971 where he practiced until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, Stewart returned to the Dallas area, living in several locations before spending the last 7 years of his life at the Courtyards at River Park in Fort Worth, where Stewart was known as "Trouble" with both affection and exasperation. This surprised no one.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nell and Dudley Loftis, brother, Joe Loftis, and wife, Guadalupe Loftis.

Survivors: Dr. Loftis is survived by his children, Amy Loftis Farrior (Edward) and Audrey Loftis Rogers (Jeff), and their mother, Carrie Jane Loftis, Stewart Barton Loftis (Michelle) and Casey Loftis Merolla (Mark), and their mother, Carolyn Loftis Tracy; his grandchildren, Evan Farrior (Alexandra), Emily Farrior, Bess Farrior, Diana Rogers, Abigail Loftis, Jonathan Loftis, Avery Merolla, and Alexa Merolla.

You were a great Dr. To me, from piercing my ears, to meeting my mom & at the hospital to sew up my face after a dog came through a window, to diagnosing a kidney stone as an adult. In my thoughts & Prayers.

Dr. Loftis was a wonderful man to work with. I learned so much from him. They don't make family doctors like him anymore. He did everything from delivering babies, taking care of fractures, vasectomies, biopsies, sutures and so much more. In the 25 years I worked with him, he never raised his voice, which I found out later from working with other doctors that is a daily occurrence for them. Dr. Loftis was a very important man in my life and I am very grateful for all that he did for me and my family. My thoughts and prayers go out to his daughters and son.

Dr. Loftis and family lived next door to Bonnie and Cleburne Warren, my parents, in Odessa. I remember Dr. Loftis well as well as Carrie Jane. Great neighbors. And I know why he was known as "trouble". Just a great guy and great doc. Wade Warren
