Dear Uncle Emil,
I know that you are in Heaven now with Jesus and rejoicing with the Angels. My Dad, your younger brother, Henry Matula Sr. , looked up to you like a father. He joined the US Marine Corps at 17 years old because he was inspired by you and Uncle Edward's service in WWII.
During my childhood, I always enjoyed trips to your house though many were a surprise to you and Aunt Evelyn. One of my first memories was the games we played when we were there and the nonstop refreshments that Aunt Evelyn always spoiled us with. You both knew how to create fun no matter what, when, or where like the time on Lake Medina with your boat. I looked forward to all those days spent together given that I was promised more true war stories and relics.... You had an amazing way of telling them that has become a legacy for the Matula family to share for generations.
I remember the time you went to Germany sometime in the 80s and bought an Audi. I later bought one for myself, but have no original story to share like you did.
The most memorable moment was when you turned 80. You told me that every year over 47 was a bonus. You said that, hate from war can destroy a person and that forgiveness is vital and only be done by God's grace. You truly were an example of a man of faith that I will never forget. Thank you for the life you lived of faith, family, and servanthood.
Your loving nephew,
Hank Jr.
