Alvin Snoga

1926 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
June 8, 1926 - July 6, 2018
Alvin Victor Snoga passed away July 6, 2018 at the age of 92. He is now reunited in heaven with Bernice, to whom he was married for 47 years before her death in 1998.

Alvin was born in his grandfather's home in White Deer, Texas June 8, 1926. His family moved to Panna Maria, Texas in December of 1935. He and his siblings helped support their family by picking cotton. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Europe, and he worked for the Rural Electrification Agency after the war.

Alvin married Bernice Pollok July 3, 1951 in Cestohowa, Texas. They raised nine children on the southeast side of San Antonio, and today 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren are part of the Snoga family.

To support his family, Alvin worked hard over the years. He had a successful career as an electrician/lineman, beginning with a civil service job at Fort Sam Houston.
He then went to work for Fred Clark Electrical Contractors, but he later returned to civil service. During his long career he worked at Kelly Air Force Base, at Medina Base, and eventually at Brooks Air Force Base, where he became a supervisor of technical trades. He oversaw the work of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and others. He retired from civil service in 1981.

While working for the federal government, Alvin also worked part time for various electrical companies and as an independent contractor. He also spent much time working on his farm and ranch in Wilson County, raising crops and cattle. After retiring, Alvin spent many hours at Snoga's Barbecue, which he and Bernice opened in 1975, and which remains in business today.

Alvin was an electrician, a rancher, and an entrepreneur, but he was also involved in fraternal organizations. He was a lifetime member of the

Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion. He was a founding member of the St. Margaret Mary's Men's Club, and Alvin and Bernice were involved in multiple programs and projects in St. Margaret Mary's parish. They also contributed time and talents to St. Gerard Catholic High School in the 1970s and to Holy Name parish since the 1980s.

In the 1990s Alvin was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of Catholic Life Insurance, a fraternal insurance organization. He served on the Board for seven years.

Family was very important to Alvin, and he loved his family dearly. He enjoyed playing dominoes and cards, sharing meals, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren during family gatherings at his home.

Alvin was predeceased by his wife Bernice; his parents Peter and Gertrude Snoga; his sister Sally and husband Sixtus Skloss; his sister Lucy and husband Otto Pechacek; his sister Gladys Snoga; his brother Emil Snoga; his brother-in-law Dan McDonald; and his son-in-law John Stanush.

Alvin is survived by his children Alva Stanush; Cynthia Fischer and husband James; Brenda Feuge and husband Billy; Denise Kellner and husband James; Eugene Snoga and wife Linda; Fulton Snoga; Gary Snoga; Howard Snoga and wife Sharon; Patricia King and husband Chris; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Bennie Snoga and wife Pat; sister Mary McDonald; brother Peter Snoga, Jr. and wife Kathy; and numerous nephews and nieces.

The family offers sincere gratitude to the staff of Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home for their kindness and support. We would also like to thank the staff of Kindred Hospice Care.
