Claiborne graduated from the Lawrenceville School, the University of Texas at Austin and obtained a Master's degree from Trinity University in San Antonio. He was a devoted and loving husband and father, and a loyal friend to many. He had a lifelong passion for the arts and literature, and many enjoyed his tongue-in-cheek political writings. He was an accomplished chef and he enjoyed traveling, hunting, collecting fine wines and smoking the occasional cigar. He was a member of the boards of the San Antonio Public Library Foundation, the University of Texas Press Advisory Council, and the Texas Book Festival 2000 Advisory Committee. Claiborne's caring and generous nature led him to serve on the boards of the United Way of San Antonio, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Y.M.C.A. and the San Antonio Museum of Art. He proudly carried on the tradition of his grandfather, John Baron Carrington, through his active involvement in the Texas Cavaliers and The Order of the Alamo organizations. As a favor to the Texas Cavaliers, Claiborne recently authored the History of the Texas Cavaliers 1976-1999. Claiborne was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Argyle Club, the Chevalier de Tastevin, and the Pilon Club. Claiborne's irrepressible wit, selfless generosity, and boundless compassion endeared him to many, and he will be profoundly missed by his family and a host of friends from near and far.
