Henry Finck Sr.

1930 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
November 18, 1930 - July 10, 2018
Henry William ("Bill") Finck passed away at home on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Fisher) and Edward Reinhold Finck; his brother, Edward R. Finck; and sister, Mary Anne Finck Graney.

He is survived by his wife Hilda; children, Kathleen Finck, Caroline Kuper (Harry Jersig "Ricky"), Henry William ("Bill") Finck Jr. (Donna), Julia Lieck (Christopher), David Finck (Cathy), Laura Abdo; and grandchildren, Henry Fisher Watel, Greta Kuper Stehr, Clara Kuper, Georgia Kuper, Harry J. Kuper, Jr., Collins Kuper, Henry W. Finck III, Steven Finck, Emily Finck Kanaby, Madeline Finck, Dylan Lieck, Hannah Lieck, Jamie Finck, Audrey Finck, Kaela Kirk, Joseph Finck, Maia Kirk, William Finck, Brian Treadway, and Nicholas, Elliott, and Danielle Abdo.

"A life well lived" doesn't fully convey the breadth of Bill's experiences and influence.

Born in San Antonio, his legacy began on an area farm from where he would go on to preside over a notable family business and raise six children with his wife of 60 years, Hilda.

Exceptionally diverse, Bill's love of the outdoors was matched by a creative and keen intellect that thrived on being challenged.

After Central Catholic High School, he first attended Notre Dame University, IL, graduated from the University of Texas at Austin where he was a Kappa Alpha member, and received his Juris Doctorate from St. Mary's University. Bill then chose a path of adventure, journeying with friend John Farley through Mexico, Central America and across the Panama Canal to start a hog farm in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
There, he met his lifetime love, Hilda, returning with her to San Antonio where they married and Bill assumed oversight of the Finck Cigar Company.

Renowned for his spirited energy, Bill also practiced law and had an influential political career, elected first as a precinct court judge and then to the Texas House of Representatives. He was especially proud of becoming Bexar County Treasurer and carrying out his promise to abolish the position. Burning his first County paycheck and lighting a Finck cigar with it and on the steps of the courthouse was only one of many memorable moments that reflected Bill's commitment to his word and character.

An active member of the Downtown Rotary, Order of the Alamo, German Club and San Antonio Country Club, Bill also spent much time in Port Aransas or at his Floresville ranch where he shared a passion for the outdoors with his children and grandchildren. Able to recite all the names of the ranch's flora and fauna, it was here he discovered yet another talent for the meticulous art of tree-growing.

Unconditionally generous, Bill's legacy will endure through his philanthropy and kindness, his colorful narrative of historic achievement, and the memories his loved ones will always carry.
