Irving Newton Obituary

NEWTON
Major Irving Newton, USAF (Retired), know widely as "Newtie" and the Wagonmaster, was born in Minnesota and passed away on Tuesday, October 06, 2009 in San Antonio at the age of 89. His military career spanned WW II, Korea and the start of the Viet Nam war. He served as a meteorologist in the Army Air Corps on nearly every island in the Pacific Theatre, at Okinawa, D-Day-3 and flew recon for the Enola Gay. He was part of the "order of old buzzards" for flying 54 unarmed weather flights over North Korea. Newtie was the Air Force WX officer who identified Roswell UFO as a weather balloon. He retired from the Air Force in 1965 and as a stockbroker at age 80. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Maggie. Surviving are his son, Philip Newton and wife, Sandy of Washington DC; daughter, Jaquie Rothermel and husband, John of San Antonio; grandchildren, Nickie Salido, Paul Newton, Chris Marietta, Adrienne Polisky, Joel, Jeremy and Jason Rohthermel and 8 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 2:30 p.m.

It is with deepest sadness that I extend my condolences to you on the loss of your beloved.

As Chair of the Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, I am sincerely thankful for his valiant service and dedication to our great country.

May the love and the wonderful memories you shared with him help you when you need it most. He will never be forgotten, and your family will be remembered in my prayers.
