Jack Milton Vance of San Antonio, Texas, passed away this Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the age of 87.
Jack was born April 30, 1925 to George Milton Vance and Florence Beatrize Heath Vance Shaw in San Antonio, Texas. He was one of nine children. He grew up and attended school here in San Antonio, after which he joined the United States Marine Corps.
Jack is a World War II veteran, having served and fought in the South Pacific. It was after that, having been sent to a Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, that he had a chance meeting with the woman he would marry, Agnes Catherine Owens Vance. Jack and Agnes were married for 64 years, until her death in 2009.
After serving in the Marines, Jack continued in Civil Service at Kelly Air Force Base. He spent years working and serving his community, including owning his own ERA real estate company, was one of the founding fathers of St. Luke's Catholic Church, served on the board at St. Joseph's Credit Union, and for several years helped run the St. Luke's Festival. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Luke's Men's Club, and he accumulated many awards and accolades for his service to the Catholic Church and to the community.
Jack is preceded in death by both his parents, George and Florence, his brothers Jean Sutton Vance and Billy Emmett Vance, sisters Mildred Ruth Vance Saathoff, June Vance and Ramona Mae Vance Buchanan, and his beloved wife Agnes. He is survived by his sisters Leona Rose Vance and Violet Maradel Vance Page, and his brother Harold Shaw, his six children, son John M. Vance, son Patrick J. Vance, son George M. Vance and wife Karen, daughter Ellen Marie Rodriguez and husband Rafael, daughter Deborah Ann Gass and husband Steve, and son Robert M. Vance and wife Debbie, as well as 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be as follows: Visitation will be Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church 4603 Manitou Drive, San Antonio, TX 78228. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 21, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church, followed by the burial at 11:00 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Brigidine Sisters of San Antonio at 5118 Loma Linda Drive, San Antonio, TX 78201
Jack Milton Vance is well loved and will be sorely missed by his family and friends. His smile and good heart touched so many people as did his infectious love of fun. May his family find solace in the fact that he is rejoined with his wife.
