James Highberg Obituary
October 29, 1935 - June 25, 2018
James Myrth Highberg, MSG, US Army Ret., was born on October 29, 1935, and died on June 25, 2018, twenty days after surgery to remove a large glioblastoma from his left temporal lobe.

Jim joined the Army on July 7, 1953, and served until November 20, 1970, mostly with the 1st Cavalry Division. He completed two tours in Vietnam from August 1967 to August 1968 and March 1969 to March 1970. He joined the 4164th United States Army Reserve School as a senior instructor based out of San Antonio in August 1972, going into the retired reserves in August 1987. He was activated out of the retired reserves from December 1990 to March 1991 for Operation Desert Storm.

Upon discharge from the Army, Jim worked for the Jackson County Health Department as the
County Sanitarian. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from University of Houston-Victoria in 1985. In 1989, he began working for the Texas Department of Health in Temple before transferring to Austin to work in septic and water systems.
He transferred to the Texas Water Board, then the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission, where he set up the
Texas Plumbing Fixture Program. Finally, he worked for the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality in Water Quality and Conservation, retiring from the State in 2003.

Jim is survived by wife, Dianna, of Georgetown, Texas; sons Nels of Avon, Connecticut, Daniel of Los Angeles, California, and Christopher of North Richland Hills, Texas; daughters Pam of Edna, Texas, and Debbie of Waco, Texas; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sisters Patricia, Nora Jean, and Audrey; brother, Charles; and son James.

It was his and his family's desire not to have a traditional funeral, so please join the family at our home, 801 Bosque Trail, Georgetown, on Saturday, July 21, 2018, between the hours of 11:00 am until 6:00 pm, to share stories, pictures, and celebrate Jim's life.

Jim was an animal lover, so in lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite animal charity.
