Jean Browne Rumsey Obituary
August 26, 2018
Jean Browne Rumsey passed away August 26, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. Born into a military family, the youngest of four children, she was well equipped for her future life. When she was five her father died suddenly. Her mother, Amy, moved back to the family home on King William St. surrounded by family, Jean embraced her San Antonio roots making life-long friends. She graduated from Jefferson High School and attended Mary Baldwin College. In 1941 she was a duchess in the Order of the Alamo Court of Legends. While working as secretary of Conopus Club, she met Herman Rumsey, a pilot trainer at Brooks Air Field. Jean soon became a war bride embracing his chosen career with the Air Force which took them all over the world living in Japan, Hawaii, Montana, Washington D.C. and many points in between. They raised three daughters embracing the culture wherever they lived. This lifestyle informed Jean's unforgettable style, exotic cuisines, love of history and literature and a large circle of friends. Jean and Herm enjoyed an active life filled with travel, water-skiing, snow-skiing and fly-fishing among others. In 1967 Herm retired from his 27 year Air Force career and they moved to Dallas, starting a grand new chapter in their dynamic lives. Jean was an active and generous volunteer in every community where they moved. She was a member of the Junior League, Dallas Women Club, The Argyle, and numerous other organizations. She made friends easily and was the consummate hostess. As a lifelong Episcopalian, she and Herm were founding members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Dallas. She will be remembered for her fearless charge into each new community, generous spirit, infectious laughter and killer bridge. Jean remained engaged with the world around her into her last decade. Devoted to family, she was a loving and caring part of the lives of her 3 daughters, 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Then family thanks the staff at The Forum at Lincoln Heights for their care and her caregivers, Blanca Sanchez and Manuela Contreras for their endless kindnesses. Jean will be sorely missed but lovingly remembered by her daughters Brooke Rumsey Allison of San Antonio, Anne Rumsey Hardinge of San Antonio and Wendy Rumsey Kilcollin of Chicago, their families and all she touched in her grand life.
