Funeral Services for LaPoe "Smitty" Smith, Jr., 57, are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Mt. Mariah Baptist Church, 3985 Highway 5, Frierson, Louisiana. A public visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 also at the church. Entombment will follow at the church cemetery. As a final farewell from his sports family and the San Antonio community, a memorial service is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Sunday, December 23, 2018 at Champion Sportsplex, 6712 Joe Louis Drive, San Antonio, TX.

LaPoe passed away on November 30, 2018. He was a native of Gloster, La, and a resident of San Antonio, Texas for nearly 25 years. He attended Second Ward High School where he excelled in sports, and was known for his baseball and basketball skills. LaPoe received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from St. Martin's College in Lacey, Washington. He served our country in the United States Army from 1979-1988.

Smitty was a certified sports agent through the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA). For nearly 20 years, he represented a number of top athletes including NBA, NFL, and WNBA players. Although, he was known to many as a naturally talented athlete, sports agent, entrepreneur, land owner and trailblazer, highest on the list was philanthropist.

LaPoe was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Anne Farris Smith and LaPoe Smith, Sr., and grandparents Cleo and Lucius Farris. Left to continue his legacy and cherish his memories are 8 children, a very special friend, 2 sisters, 3 brothers, 2 grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sports family, other relatives and friends. Final rites are entrusted to Good Samaritan Funeral Home of Shreveport, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given toward a scholarship fund in his honor.
