Macario De La Zerda Obituary

DE LA ZERDA
Macario "Mac" De La Zerda, longtime resident of Poth, entered eternal rest Sunday, April 21, 2013, at the age of 87. Mac was born in Sutherland Springs, TX on July 26, 1925 to the late Juan Antonio De La Zerda and Cruz Garcia De La Zerda. Later they moved to Kosciusko, TX where they sharecropped on the Aloysius Kolodziej, Sr. farm. At the age of 17 he volunteered to join the U.S. Navy to serve his country. Upon completion of boot camp at San Diego, CA, his wife, Juanita Garza De La Zerda and infant daughter, Sally De La Zerda Coronado, met him at San Diego and visited for several days. Not knowing their destination, Mac and his shipmates sailed for sixteen days to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The group's final destination was Samar Island in the Philippines where he was stationed for one year. Mac returned to the states on the USS Edgecomb via the port at Swan Island, Oregon. He was honorably discharged from Camp Wallace, TX in 1946. Mac served Wilson County and the Poth community in various capacities. He worked for Wilson County many years and has come to know virtually every farm and resident of the county. He was awarded a Lifetime membership in VFW Post 8555 in 1970, where he served as former Post Commander and remained a principal leader in that organization. He has served on the Poth City Council and Poth Housing Authority. An active member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, he also enjoyed being a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mac was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife of over 64 years, Juanita Garza De La Zerda; brothers, Simon and Gabino; and sister, Emilia. Mac is survived by his children, Sally Coronado, widow of Victor Coronado, Jimmy De La Zerda, Adela Ashburn and husband Michael, Stella Soliz, Delia Ramirez, Eloisa Ingmire, Johnny De La Zerda and wife Mary Esther, Jesse De La Zerda, Dwayne De La Zerda and wife Jodi, and Darla Polasek and husband Edward; 20 Grandchildren; 20 Great Grandchildren; and sister, Francisca Cantu. Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, and a rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Vinyard Funeral Home, Poth. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, April 25, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Poth, followed by interment at Blessed Sacrament Cemetery, Poth, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
