Maurice Treiber Obituary
Maurice Lamar (Tex) Treiber, 78, passed away on April 1, 2013 at his home, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on December 3, 1934 in San Antonio to Frederick Antone and Wanda Rust Treiber. Tex grew up in San Antonio and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952. After high school he attended St Mary's University, graduating in June 1956. He attended Officer's Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy in December 1956. Tex had a distinguished career in the Navy, including serving as Personal Aide and Flag Secretary to Commander SIXTH Fleet as well as serving as Commanding Officer of the USS SELLERS (DDG 11) and Commodore of Destroyer Squadron 23. He moved frequently and lived all over the world but was able to come home in 1976 to serve as Commanding Officer of Navy Recruiting District, San Antonio. When he was relieved, his Change of Command ceremony was held at the Alamo, the only time that a Change of Command ceremony has ever been held there. He also received a proclamation from Governor John Connelly designating him an "Admiral in the Texas Navy". Over the course of his career he received many awards including the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (four gold stars), the Navy Commendation Medal (two gold stars), Vietnam Service Medal (one bronze star), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (one bronze star), and the Navy Achievement Medal. He retired in 1987 after 31 years of service at the rank of Captain. "Keep the Faith" was more than Tex's catch phrase, it was his way of life. He was an active member of St. Helena's Parish and his faith was his anchor. Tex was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Antone and Wanda Rust Treiber; his brother, Gene Treiber; and sisters, Charmaine and Marilyn Treiber Velasquez. Tex is survived by his wife Susie of San Antonio; his daughter, Kari and husband Ayers Blocher of Dallas, TX; son, Tom and wife Donna Treiber of San Antonio, TX; son, Rob and wife Monique Treiber of Sugarland, TX; and son, Mike and wife Kim Treiber of Oceanside, CA; his grandchildren Brian, Matthew and Kevin Blocher, Melanie and husband Anthony Bassili, Scott Treiber, Tara and husband LJ Rendon and Tiffany Kempf, Andre and Kaleigh Treiber, Taylor McAdoo and Gentry Hammonds; his great grandchild, Ethan Treiber; grandchildren by love if not blood, Kolton and Kylie Kaufman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
