May 1, 1915 - December 22, 2014
Alberta "Bertie" H. Smith, born May 01, 1915 entered Heaven's Gate on Monday, December 22, 2014. Bertie was born in San Antonio, graduating from Alamo Heights High School before briefly attending the University of Texas (Austin). She met and married James "Jimmy" Arthur Smith a US Naval Academy graduate attending flight training at Randolph Field. As a Navy family Bertie and Jimmy travelled the world for 30 years before retiring to San Antonio in 1964. Bertie became a matriarch in the San Antonio art scene over the next 50 years. She was affiliated with the San Antonio Potter's Guild since its inception and deeply involved with the Southwest School of Art. Bertie, an accomplished local and nationally recognized clay artist, was a mentor, teacher, friend and inspiration to many area artists until her passing. Bertie's loving husband Jimmy preceded her in death. She is survived by her son Jay J. Smith and wife Karen, grandsons Jeffrey and Matthew Smith, granddaughter Ryann Smith, two great granddaughters, a great grandson and their children. A memorial service will be held at Mission Park North on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 2PM. Interment will be with her husband Jimmy at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the San Antonio Potter's Guild or the Southwest School of Art. You may sign the on-line guest book at www.missionparks.com.
