Ben Marshall Obituary
Colonel Ben Fridge Marshall, US Army (Ret.), passed away peacefully in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday, September 08, 2013, after a brief illness. He was born November 19, 1916 in Atmore, Alabama and moved to Mobile a few years later. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1936 and the University of Alabama in 1941. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through ROTC, Ben entered the United States Army immediately after graduation and joined the 9th Infantry Division at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; later transferring to the US Army Air Force for pilot training. He served as a fighter pilot until his separation from the service in 1946. From 1946 until January 1951, he worked as a baker and production manager for Marshall's Electric Maid Bakeries in Mobile. Ben re-entered the service as an Infantry Captain assigned as an Assistant Professor of Military Science and Commandant of Cadets at Marion Institute. His next assignment was with the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. Throughout his career in the Army, Ben served in Command and Staff positions in the United States, Europe and the Far East, including the command of a battalion in Germany and a tour in Vietnam in 1966-67. He retired as a Regular Army Colonel from Ft. Polk, LA in June 1973 and re-entered the baking business as Vice-President of Marshall Biscuit Company in Mobile. In 1986, Ben retired from the baking business. He and his wife, the former Carolyn Aleshire Wilson of Mobile, moved to San Antonio, TX and into the Army Resident Community. In Texas, Ben became an avid racquetball player competing in tournaments all over the country; most recently in a tournament in Madison, WI in July of this year. The move to Texas also brought them closer to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ben was preceded in death by Carolyn and is survived by son, John Wilson Marshall and his wife, Susan Goudreau Marshall of Austin, TX; daughter Allison Aleshire Marshall and her dog, Logan of Houston, TX; daughter Dana Marshall Pardee and her husband, Kenneth Ray Pardee of Abilene, TX; grandson John Wilson Marshall Jr. and his wife Julie Gaidys Marshall; grandson Steven Goudreau Marshall and his wife, Brenda Harralson Marshall; and granddaughter Averi Pardee Mullins and her husband, James Merret Mullins. Great Grandchildren include Brianna Mullins, Evan, Owen and Lily Marshall and Taylor and Jackson Marshall. A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors.
