I began spending holidays and weekends in Marathon, TX about 9 years ago and I met Maisie at Mary Baxter's Gallery. I fell in love with a door she was carving but it was not the correct size to fit at my house. Through the years I continued to admire a door that was in the Marathon Coffee Shop managed by Maisie's daughter-in-law, Nancy. I also loved the doors she carved for the churches in Marathon and on display at Eve's Garden. In July of 2014 I visited with Maisie at her house and she showed me the beautiful mural she painted on her bedroom wall. I purchased one of her paintings and I asked her if I provided a door would she carve it for me and she said yes. I called her one day to check on the progress of the door and she didn't answer, later I called again and when she answered I told her I was worried about her when she did not answer and she told me "well I had gone up town". This will always stick in my mind as the population of Marathon is about 500 with one main street but it was up town to Maisie. I believe I have the last door Maisie carved in August of 2014. She signed her book for me when I picked it up that day. I saw her and visited with her a few times in the following years, once on her birthday. I will miss her but she will always be remembered. She was a wonderful, talented lady who overcame adversity.
