Artist and educator Jane Margaret (Jan) Tips Rowe died peacefully at home on February 13, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Born in 1942 in San Antonio, Texas, to Frances May Beam and Will Chambers Tips, Jan was educated at the University of Texas and Trinity University and spent more than fifty years creating abstract painting and sculpture that referred to landscape and the power of memory. She taught at UTSA, the San Antonio Art Institute, and Saint Mary's Hall and served as an art critic for the San Antonio Express-News. Her work was featured in 10 one-person, 17 two-person and 41 group exhibitions. Her art is part of 12 public collections in Texas and one in Peru.
With her late husband, artist Reginald M. Rowe, Jr. (1920–2007), she crafted a life designed to afford the most possible time for producing art, reading, and delighting in a household of family pets and lively conversation with friends and family. In 2009, she found new love with Sam Maclin, who filled the rest of her days with warmth, gentle humor, and robust home cooking from his garden.
Possessed of an incisive intellect, Jan was never so happy as when fiercely concentrated on producing subtleties of color and texture in a piece she was working on or when offering attentive counsel to those who sought it. She was a loving mother, a dedicated teacher and mentor, and a devoted friend.
She is survived by her daughters Betsy Beckmann and Michele Rowe-Shields; her sister Joan Tips Thaggard and her husband Al Thaggard; nephews Ty Thaggard and his wife Holly Emery and their children Emery and Will; and Martin Thaggard and his wife Jennifer Perry and their son Oliver.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be a private interment at Mission Burial Park North. The family wishes to thank the devoted caretakers who served her during her illness: Hope Martinez, Anita Padilla, Nora Escamilla, and Dora Ramirez. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to the Animal Defense League or the charity of your choice.
