In his spare time, he designed and built several homes in Riverside and La Jolla. Ed also enjoyed amateur wine-making, developing his distinctive Pavo Grande label, well known in family circles. He is survived by his wife, Georgiana Burkart, son Thomas Burkart, daughters Patricia Burkart, Linda Dore, Teresa McIntosh, Annette Burkart, and Mary O'Connor, 13 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
