Eugene Ciechanowski September 26, 2017 SAN DIEGO Eugene Ciechanowski, a veteran newspaperman, passed away peacefully on September 26 at his Point Loma home in the presence of friends. He was 89. Gene served 25 years on The San Diego Union and the Union-Tribune. He was an all-around newsman. As he once wrote, "I started on the news copy desk, then was wire editor, slot, news editor, Sunday editor, Sunday slot, sports slot and editorial pages editor". (The slotman is the copy chief, handing out stories to copy editors to be edited and given a headline.) Known affectionately as "Chick", he earlier had worked on the Arizona Republic, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and European Stars & Stripes, the newspaper for the American military in Europe.A journalism graduate of the University of Arizona, Eugene served his country in the Army, based in Japan, Germany and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. Gene was an avid Cubs fan and was ecstatic when they won the World Series. He was devoted to his Roman Catholic faith and served on numerous committees for the church. He loved travel and music and will be missed by all who knew him.He is survived by two sisters, Alice Jirmasek and Florence Kropiewnicki, and several loving nieces and nephews. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Casimir and Anna; sisters Lorraine, Virginia, Sabina and Irene; and brothers Henry, Dominic, Arthur, Raymond and Walter.Visitation is Friday October 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Beardsley-Mitchell Funeral Home, 1818 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., with Rosary at 6:30. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. October 14 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 2802 Cadiz St., San Diego.In lieu of flowers, donations to the Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Immaculate Heart Fraternity SFO or ETWN would be appreciated.
