Gordon Severson Obituary

SEVERSON, GORDON July 31, 1943 to November 17, 2006 Gordon Curtis Severson passed away at 11:35 PM on Friday, November 17th of complications relating to pancreatitis. He spent the last month at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido fighting the illness with his family by his side. His wife of 42 years, Mary, daughter and son-in-law Kristine and David Thomas, son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Beatrice Severson, and five grandchildren survive him. Gordy was born in Washington state where he met his wife, Mary, and started his family. In 1970, Gordy moved his family to Southern California to pursue his dream of becoming a golf professional. In addition, he helped launch Taylor Made Golf Company and coached the men's and women's golf team at USIU. For the past 16 years, Gordy was an instructor at the Professional Golfers Career College in Temecula. In recent years, Gordy became passionate about thoroughbred horse racing, both owning and breeding. Gordy's biggest thrill in horse racing came when his filly Lady George won multiple stakes races and became two year old California Cup Champion. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, November 29th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside, 2001 El Camino Real, Oceanside, CA 92054. In lieu of flowers and in recognition of Gordy's generosity and love for horses, the family respectfully requests that donations in his memory be made to Tranquility Farm, P.O. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time. I had known Gordie from the early 80's when he was at Pauma Valley CC. I enjoyed playing golf with him and also catching up with him at the paddox area at Del Mar. He was an awesome gentleman with a warm heart, a great smile, a great competitor and had a passion for teaching the game of golf. He will be missed by many.

I've lost the most insightful teaching professional, academic or athletic, I've ever known. Gordy excelled at listening, and then, converting one's problems into a learning experience - be it golf or life. I'm better at both because of him.

Gordy was a man bigger than life. We will always remember his stories of golf and horses and when speaking of them, the way his smile and laughter would light up his face. As a golf professional, his patience, positive support, humor and ability to understand our individual strengths, allowed us to be our best in the game of golf. We miss you Gordy, you were the best. Your love of the game will carry on with us forever.

Gordy had a profound knowledge of the game of golf. He had mastered the art of imparting his knowledge with skill and patience. We considered ourselves very fortunate to have known and admired this uncommonly talented man.
Thanks for the memories Gordy!
