We are grateful for the memory of Howard and Judy: I met them recently married somewhere on the East coast, at their home: we had dinner and saw a horror movie during a stormy rainy evening, and I remember both Judy and I got scared by a loud noise and ended up jumping towards Howard for protection! That´s what he did best. May you find comfort and peace. Elena Wachong Wellesley ´66....Costa Rica

On Jan 9, 2020, Judy, Howard and I were invited to the Chinese Cultural Center of SDSU. In one room, Dr Li-Rong Lilly Cheng showed us a variety of traditional Chinese costumes and said we could try them on if we liked. Howard was in high spirits and immediately picked up a robe and put it on as did Judy and I. Fighting for cancer, he was never lost his sense of humor and spirit. One year quickly passed, he was missed by all of us.

Howard s life and message were writ large: go everywhere, try everything, extend and touch everyone: who would have thought a man whose career was in health in New England would extend to writing books, plays, musicals, in California and around the globe? And that his talent would reach so many people in so many continents ? In this his anniversary month, his talent, Judy 's love and their friends' fond memories of Howard come together in Costa Rica: we celebrate not only Costa Rica s Independence Bicentennial: we celebrate Howard and Judy s zest for life, the joy they gave us through their combined work and talent: we are blessed that they have shared their love and friendship with us
. Bendiciones!

Howard was one of the most knowledgeable and productive person I have ever met. After his retirement, he became a playwright. Among his ten plays, one of them was a musical adaptation in English from an ancient Chinese classic “ Xi Xiang Ji” - Romance of the Western Chamber. The lyrics are poetic and the musics are mesmerizing. In memory of Howard, the play will have its San Diego premiere after the pandemic.
Fighting the cancer, he never lost his sense of humor. He remained optimistic and high spirits. With Judy’s loving care, he was in high hopes of beating the odds and living through 2020 and many years beyond.
He will be missed by all of us.

Howard was my cousin. I was constantly impressed by his depth and capability. Always enjoyed our visits to see him and Judy in ElCajon and LaJolla. Our hearts go out to Judy, their children and their grandkids.

I met Howard only once, when I visited my dear Wellesley College friend Judi when they were recently married. It was a brief visit, yet the memory of his cheerfulness, warmth and ability to scare us by reading a horror story during a stormy evening remains happy and vivid in my memory....54 years later. Such a man. What a gift to all who knew him.

I just saw the news today. My heart is breaking. I was always deeply honored to be considered his friend. My sincere condolences to all of the Rubenstein family.

Forgive my grief for one removed,
Thy creature, whom I found so fair.
I trust he lives in thee, and there
I find him worthier to be loved.
