Capt. John K. Cammall Obituary
Capt. John K. Cammall, USN November 2, 1930 - December 26, 2017 San Diego Captain John K. Cammall, USN (Ret.), died December 26, 2017 at home with family by his side. He was born on November 2, 1930 in Milton, MA. John was attending Massachusetts Institute of Technology when he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1954. During his early years in the Navy, he travelled to many parts of the world before being stationed in San Diego with his wife Margaret and six children. John was a Naval aviator for much of his career serving six tours in Vietnam, including two as Executive Officer then Commanding Officer of VAW 114, flying E2-A "Hawkeye" radar aircraft off the USS Kitty Hawk. During his career, John received many medals and decorations, including the Bronze Star with Valor, Navy Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. After retiring from the Navy, John became active in volunteering with Saint Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Family Church, the SHARE food program, and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to assist seniors with tax preparation. John was very family-oriented and loved to travel with them. He enjoyed sports and was an avid Padres fan. John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret, daughter Karen Avilla (Darrell), sons Ian, William (Kris), David (Barbara), Kevin (Arcelia), and Neal (Patricia), six grandsons, three great-grandchildren, and niece Linda Preciado (Mike). In addition, John is survived by his sister Alma Ducharme, his nieces and nephews and their families in Massachusetts. A viewing will be held Friday, January 12th from 4:00 8:00 PM at the El Cajon Mortuary and a Mass celebrating his life will be held at Holy Family Church on Saturday, January 13th at 1:00 PM.
