John W. Evans January 20, 1935 - August 20, 2017 Jamul UCSD Professor Emeritus John W. Evans died peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 20, 2017. Friends and family surrounded him at his passing. He leaves his wife Cynthia, his son Wynne and daughter Elizabeth and their families, his sisters Celeste and Carol and brothers Rele and Harry along with their families.John was born in Mt. Vernon, New York, the son of Aurelius Augustus and Dorothy Lillian Evans, and he grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.He graduated from Cornell Medical School in 1958, interned at the New York Hospital, and completed a residency in Neurology at Bellevue Hospital and the New York Hospital, finishing in 1962.He went to Los Angeles as a fellow at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute and then transferred to UCLA's graduate program in Mathematics. During graduate school he worked at IBM's Western Data Processing Center located at UCLA.He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1966 and then went to the Mathematical Research Branch, NIAMD, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD and served in the Public Health Service for two years.He came to UCSD in 1968 with a joint appointment in the School of Medicine and the Department of Mathematics. His research areas were Nerve Axon Equations, Pulmonary Gas Exchange and assorted applied mathematics problems.A celebration of John's life will be held at the UCSD Faculty Club Thursday, August 31 from 2:30-4:30pm.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor John's memory donate to the California State Parks Foundation.
