Katherine Marie Neilson
April 25, 1936 - January 5, 2021
Our mother, Katherine, joined our father, Carl, in heaven on January 5, 2021. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while her family immigrated from Italy to America. After high school, she met and married her beloved Carl (a handsome Air Force man). In 1969, the family relocated to San Diego, CA, to raise their three children, Kathleen, Eddie, and Lisa. Katherine's greatest passions were her family, decorating, bridge, volunteering at Kaiser Hospital (40 years), and her Eucharistic Ministry at St Therese.

She also loved sports and never missed her grandson Jason's baseball games and was so proud when Jason and Jessica were able to give her a great-granddaughter, Hailey. She was preceded in death by her husband Carl, her parents, brother, Dominic Strangio, grandson, Brandon Neilson. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Neilson Soto (Rafael), Lisa Smith, William Neilson (Brenda Varner); grandchildren, Jason, Nate, Cassie, Corie; great-granddaughters, Destiny and Hailey; brother, Frank Strangio; her nieces, Linda (Lars) and Susan, and many many friends.Mom, we will miss your spaghetti, Vegas, and the shopping. Give dad hugs. Funeral services are private at Holy Cross Cemetery.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Kathy at Kaiser Permanente. She was an extremely dedicated and hard working volunteer, who gave so much of herself to help others. She always went above and beyond in her work and for those around her. Kathy knew everything about how to run the gift shop and I was so grateful that she shared with me all she knew.

Kathy was a strong, caring, kind and loving person and I am so blessed to have worked with her and to have her as a friend. She helped me through good times and bad.

To her family, may the love and memories you created and shared comfort you at this time. Kathy touched and enriched the lives of all those she knew. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I admired her and will miss her. Heaven has a beautiful new angel.

Kathy was a lovely lady, always with a kind word for everyone. She was an excellent Bridge player and a formidable opponent.

I volunteered with Kathie at the Kaiser Gift Shop where she did a wonderful job running it and purchasing merchandise. She was a pleasure to be around and remained a good friend even after I had to give up volunteering. I am sorry for your loss.
