Muerl Walter Norton Obituary
Muerl Walter Norton October 29, 1920 - March 7, 2018 Point Loma Our sweet mother, grandmother and great-grandmother had her heavenly birthday March 7, 2018, after suffering with Alzheimer's in her later years. Born in San Leandro, California, to Carl and Mildred Walter, Muerl moved with her parents and her brother Carl throughout the western U.S. and Canada due to her father's job demands with Caterpillar Tractor Co. Upon graduating high school in Spokane, Washington, Muerl attended the College of Pacific (now UOP) in Stockton, California, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. There she met the love of her life, Jim Norton, and they married in the COP chapel on August 14, 1943. Jim worked for Pacific Telephone in Stockton. They lived nearby in French Camp where they welcomed their only child, Scott, into the world on March 27, 1946. After several Bay Area transfers and promotions, they relocated to San Diego where Muerl soon became very active in her church, joined the Kiwaniannes of the Point Loma Kiwanis Club, taught sewing at the Salvation Army's Door of Hope, entered the PEO sisterhood with many of her closest friends and crewed as first mate on Jim's sailboat. All the while sewing most of her and Scott's clothes, preparing amazing meals for her family and keeping a meticulous home. When Scott left for college in 1964, Muerl collaborated in the establishment of a preschool at Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church and taught there for many years. She loved teaching children and they loved her. Muerl and Jim had many travel adventures beyond the United States including a trip through Europe, New Zealand, Fiji, Russia and a cruise through the Panama Canal. When at home, one of their favorite activities was ballroom dancing once a month with Quivie Dance Club attended by many of their closest friends. After Jim's passing in 1999, Muerl began to travel with Scott and his wife, Laurie, and Muerl's granddaughter, Jennifer. She remained actively involved with her friends and volunteer work when not traveling. Muerl was very giving and supportive to her four grandchildren, Jeff Norton (Keri), Jennifer Norton, Justin Hall (Sarah) and Nate Hall (Alicia), and her five great-grandchildren Zach Cantu, Skyler Fischkelta, Cameron Norton, Hunter Cantu and Violet Hall. Not long after her last travel adventure in 2013, Muerl required part-time assistance in her home. Senior Helpers provided Muerl with a wonderful and loving caregiver, Arlyce Clemmons. A 24/7 caregiving team led by Arlyce became necessary as Muerl's dementia progressed into Alzheimer's. A God-focused, respectfully casual celebration of Muerl's life will take place May 11th at 11:00AM in the main sanctuary of Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., in San Diego.
