Pamela Masters Obituary

Pamela S. "Penny" Masters SAN DIEGO -- Pamela "Penny" Masters, a long time Vice President at Sea World, died July 20, 2015 from complications of pneumonia. Penny was born October 7, 1946, raised in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Brush High School. She later attended Ohio State University where she majored in Literature. From Ohio State she was recruited to work for the CIA in Langley, VA. In 1968, while working as an intelligence writer, she met the love of her life, Chuck Masters. After only a few weeks, Penny and Chuck were married - and remained so for the rest of her life. After leaving the CIA, she moved to Los Angeles and then to the University of Washington in Seattle where Chuck received an MFA in Art. From there it was on to SDSU where Chuck taught until 1977. In 1976, Penny began a long career at Sea World, beginning as a records clerk and advancing to Vice President of Human Resources. As she rose through the ranks, she became one of the most beloved and cherished employees in Sea World history. "She could do things that no one else could." In 2001, her department received the highly coveted EVE (Exemplary Volunteer Effort) from the U.S. Secretary of Labor. Her legacy became and will remain a champion of all park employees and the park itself. Her goal was to prove that corporate efficiency and employee well being worked hand-in-hand. Upon her retirement in 2002, she became an even more voracious reader, world traveler and overseer of her husband, her grandchildren and her beloved dogs. She is survived by her husband Chuck; her daughter Samantha Gianulis and son-in-law, Pete Gianulis; and her grandchildren: Dillon, Alex, Zoe and Melia Gianulis. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28th at Sea World in the Nautilus Pavilion, 500 Sea World Dr., San Diego. A family interment will be held Miramar National Cemetery. Now in 2018 I was just thinking about all the wonderful people in my life. Penny did so much for me. I had a very bad drug problem and she cared enough to make sure I didn't go to prison. She was so great at pulling strings! How different my life could have been. She believed in me enough to give me a second chance. No one had ever done that for me. Chuck and Sammy, I'm sorry for your loss. A great woman she was and in our memories she will live forever.

It was with great sadness that I learned of the "passing" of Penny. She was an amazing woman; highly intelligent, funny, strong, assertive, compassionate, fair and had a heart of gold. She is at the top of the list of women I admire most. It was a privilege to have known her.

My sincerest condolences to her family.

How Penny hated to fly! I remember when we were part of a small Sea World team commuting back and forth from L.A. when we were closing down Marineland. We were in those small, twin turboprop planes. She would always grip my hand like she was going to tear it off!

She was a smart, witty, funny, caring woman. I'll miss her.

Penny Masters--twinkle in her eye, kindness in her heart. I don't know anyone with a faster wit or better vocabulary than Penny. We share many, many laughs to the point of weakness and adventures beyond the pale. Her love will keep her light alive a long time, but my oh my, will we ever have so much fun?

Penny was such a wonderful person that truly put people first. When our daughter Alexis was diagnosed at the age of 4 with Autism, we had little resources to afford the special treatments and therapies to help our daughter. Even the medical insurance wouldn't cover the many therapies she needed. Penny stepped in to help make her treatments possible. Our daughter is now 19 years old and has benefited so much from Penny's support. We will forever be grateful to her and her loving kindness. may God bless your family.
