Roger Allen Gartland May 23, 1932 - March 4, 2018 Carlsbad Roger Allen Gartland, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Sunday, March 4th in hospice care at Brookdale Carlsbad, CA. Born in Fertile, Minnesota, on May 23, 1932, Roger was one of four children born to Dwight and Ida Gartland. The family moved to Berkeley, California, where Roger later graduated from Berkeley High School. In June of 1958, Roger married Carol Ann Sharp and had three children: Karen, Craig, and Lori. Together they raised their family in the community of Redondo Beach. A graduate of UCSB and USC, Roger's career in education spanned over 35 years, primarily in the role of principal at Lunada Bay and Montemalaga Elementary Schools in the Palos Verdes School District. A man of great character, Roger was committed to his family, his community and his Christian faith involved at Rolling Hills Covenant and Solana Beach Presbyterian churches. Known for his love of organic eating and rigorous exercise, he worked out regularly up until he died an inspiration to both young and old. His was a life well lived. Roger will be greatly missed by all his loved ones, but leaves a wonderful legacy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Ann Gartland and survived by his wife, Carol Grimes-Gartland and her family. He is also survived by his daughter Karen Meece and son-in-law Doug Meece, son Craig Gartland and daughter-in-law Sharon Gartland, and daughter Lori Brandt and son-in-law Christopher Brandt. Roger was also grandfather to ten grandchildren: Christopher, Kellie, Paige, Erik, Jeremy, Matthew, MacKenzie, Evan, Nolan, and Owen; and three great-grandchildren: Arlyn, Wyatt, and Warner. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 18, at 2:30 p.m., at Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, 120 Stevens Ave. in Solana Beach, California.
