Virginia Gilloon Obituary

GILLOON, VIRGINIA A. Born in New York City on February 21, 1910. Virginia Gilloon passed in her Pacific Beach home on February 12, 2003. She is survived by her niece and nephew, Mary Lee Maguire and James Gilloon. Miss Gilloon made Pacific Beach her life long home after attending Berkeley University in the 1930s. She was a teacher and counselor at Mission Bay High School until her retirement in 1968. As a caring educator and beloved local institution she inspired generations of Pacific Beach youth, many of whom continued to visit her throughout her life. A member of the San Diego Sierra Club since its foundation in 1948, she was an early and effective environmentalist and leader in the effort to establish and protect Torrey Pines State Park and Mission Bay Park. Her memorial service will be held Sat., March 8th, 3 pm, at the residence of Dr. BJ Spitler, 4560 Ladera St. Pt. Loma.
