Irving Gold Obituary

Published by San Diego Union-Tribune on Aug. 3, 2014.
Gold, Irving Louis SAN DIEGO -- Irving Gold was born in Chicago on January 10, 1916, a year before the United States entered World War I, the son of Florence and Louis Gold. He lived through the Great Depression and served in the Philippines during World War II, where he was awarded The Bronze Star. In 1939, he met Victoria Saltzman, whom he married in 1941 and with whom he lived happily until the time of her death in 2000. In 1946, upon his return from the war, Irv and Vicky opened Wee Moderns, a childrenswear store that served the North Side of Chicago. Later stores were also opened in Skokie and Aurora, Illinois. The couple worked together in the stores until their retirement more than forty years later. In 2003, Irv moved to San Diego and lived at Vi at La Jolla Village. It was there that he made close friends. He also began volunteering at Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla. He looked forward to his Monday and Tuesday mornings at the hospital and the family is grateful to the people there who helped him serve until just a few months before his death at the age of 98 on July 30, 2014. Vicky and Irv also shared a dedication to family, immediate and extended, and this is their greatest legacy. Irv regularly called his sons, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, nephew and nieces. What the couple gave to their two sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in terms of depth of commitment to family and friends is immeasurable. Irving Gold is survived by his brother, Chick (Natalie) Gold, two sons, Richard (Mary Spaniola) of Rowayton, CT, Russell (Andrea) of San Diego, Renee Gold of Westport, CT, grandchildren, Jedd Gold (Marissa), Amanda (Santino) DeRose, Celia and Seth Gold, Kristen Gold and Kristofer Ast, and great-grandchildren, Alexa Gold, Brielle Gold and Leonardo DeRose. Services will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, 9001 Towne Center Drive, San Diego 92122, on Sunday, August 3, at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made to The Victoria S. Gold Memorial Fund, NorthShore University HealthSystem Foundation, 1033 University Place, Evanston, IL 60201-9928.

I received a notice in my email about the anniversary of this passing and I immediately developed a craving for one of your knuckle sandwiches. Instead I will savor the many happy memories you provided. Love.

Irv, working for you was one of the most valuable experiences of my life. Rest in peace - you have earned it.

I will miss our weekly phone conversations and catch-ups. I will miss the phone ringing every Sunday mornings. And I will miss your great big caring heart that stretched from Chicago to San Diego and beyond. But you did a good job in every way. You gave all of us life, love, laughs, wisdom, stories, and a center of gravity. 98 years is good run, and you ran a good one. Say hi to Aunt Vicki and Nonnie and Poppy. I probably won't talk to you later, but who knows. Goodbye one last time. Love you, Todd

Grandpa, I wish I had been able to speak at your service, but you know how shy I am. I would have told everyone how you welcomed me and my sister into your family without reservation, and always treated me with the same love and respect you treat all of your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. I will miss you threatening us with "punches in the nose..." and your interest in what is happening in my life. You were a good man, and we are all better people for having known you. Rest peacefully, Kris.
