Alan Roth Obituary

ROTH, ALAN Alan Roth passed on from us in the early morning of September 22, 2008, in his home in Rancho Santa Fe, CA. Alan was surrounded by his loving family - wife Ingrid of 38 years, and his son Andrew. Alan Roth was born in New York City to Mollie and Philip Roth on June 2, 1934, attended Mid-town Ethical Culture School, through 6th grade, and the Fieldston School in Riverdale, NY, from 1946-52. At Brown University, he developed a lifelong passion for history and music, was a member of Pi Lambda Phi fraternity, and served as the captain of the Brown soccer team. Alan graduated from Brown in '56 as a junior Phi Beta Kappa scholar and an honor student. Alan went on to start his career at Lehman Brothers as a junior analyst in '57, and in 1961, Alan left Lehman Brothers to start his own investment advisory firm, and at the age of 27, he became one of the youngest ever to buy a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. With his meticulous attention to details and strict adherence to honesty in his analyses, he quickly became one of the new young men who forever changed the way business was done on Wall Street. Alan specialized in entertainment and railroad stocks, and in railroads, his knowledge was second to none. He predicted the downfall of the railroads, which were some of the biggest powers of the time, and the merging of the major companies, and served as advisor and coordinator in one of the biggest mergers of the century - the creation of the Penn-Central Railroad. His accurate predictions and expert opinions in those changing times were critical to anyone involved. Alan later moved to California for the beautiful warm weather, where he lived the last 27 years of his life managing private funds, playing tennis as often as he could, and serving as a fine role model in the many years he coached youth soccer. Alan felt strongly connected to nature and had a great affection for animals. We admire Alan's outstanding achievements in life and his strong character of integrity and morals. He was very much dedicated to his family, and we are so very thankful for the many years we shared together. We love you and we miss you, and we wish you a safe journey until we see you again.
