John L. "Jack" Boyer M.D. Obituary
Boyer, John L. "Jack", MD ALPINE -- Jack Boyer was born in Maumee, Ohio on August 14, 1921 and passed away peacefully at Hospice Park View Home in San Diego on May 31, 2014 after a nine month battle with cancer. He was the son of Rev. John and Grace Boyer. The family moved to San Diego when Jack was in Jr. High and he graduated from Hoover High School in 1939. He enlisted in the Navy and under the V12 program graduated from USC. He then went on to Medical School at Case-Western Reserve University where he received his MD Degree. Dr. Boyer did further specialty training in internal medicine and cardiology. Returning to San Diego he began a 35 year private practice being one of the founding doctors of the Alvarado Medical Center in 1959. He loved medicine and called his time the "golden age of medicine" when many of the treatments and medicines now commonplace were just being discovered. Of special interest to him was the field of exercise and fitness. He was deeply influenced by Dr. Fred Kasch at San Diego State University who had developed the Adult Fitness and Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Dr. Boyer became the Medical Director of the program and in this capacity, he and Dr. Kasch did groundbreaking research that proved the important role exercise and fitness plays in heart disease prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Boyer also taught courses in the graduate school at SDSU. He became a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and served as President 1977-1978. He was appointed to the President's Council on Fitness and Sports in 1970 until 1974. Dr. Boyer loved sports, snow skiing, hiking, golf and especially horseback riding. He and his wife Donna moved to Alpine in 1979 so they could ride their horses on the mountain trails. He was a member of Los Senderos riding club for many years and enjoyed the camaraderie of his riding buddies. For over 33 years, Dr. Boyer was very active in the Alpine Community Church. He served as Moderator, sang in the choir and was always available to the congregation for medical advice. Dr. Boyer took special joy in leading his family on hikes in the Cuyamaca Mountains and spending time at Warner Springs. He is survived by Donna, his wife of 44 years, daughters Roberta Perry (James), Michelle Zamsky (Dennis), Clair Boyer and son John Boyer (Linda), grandchildren Jeff and Scott Perry, Jenn Virgen, Bernie Blocker, Alex and Lauren Tallarida and also nine great-grandchildren. Memorial service: 11 a.m., June 14, Alpine Community Church, 2225 W. Victoria Dr., Alpine. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alpine Community Church Memorial Fund, the Kasch-Boyer Endowment SDSU / Campanile Foundation or Sharp Hospice.
