James Robert Swab

James Robert Swab September 26, 1939 to June 23, 2007 James Robert Swab, 67, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 23, 2007, at home in Carlsbad. Born September 26, 1939, in Harrisburg, Pa., he lived in Carlsbad for 32 years. He graduated from Penn State University in 1961 and became a naval officer whose service included active duty in Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve at the rank of Commander and worked for several years thereafter as a Comptroller at Camp Pendleton. The family moved to Carlsbad in 1975, and he started a third career investing in property. Accused of being a developer when he ran for mayor, he was, on the contrary, a champion of the "Old Carlsbad" style. A proponent of the "Save Open Space" iniative and a supporter of quality-of-life growth, he often defended that position to the city council and was a frequent contributer to "Letters to the Editor." Jim was a man of honor and passion whose loss touches us all. Mr. Swab was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and James C. Swab. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Shirley Ann Swab, of Carlsbad; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Ed Kostick of Keswick, Virginia; and nieces Carol Kostic of Florida, and Karen Victor of Danville. Viewing will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside. A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Eternal Hills Mortuary. A private cremation is planned. Eternal Hills Mortuary is handling arrangements. Sign the Guest Book online memorials.nctimes.com
