Ann Williams Obituary

WILLIAMS, ANN S. Jazz singer Ann Williams, 79, died at 5:00 AM, October 28, 2007, in San Diego, CA, after complications from a fall. The daughter of Harry and Ellen Strodbeck, Ann was born March 10, 1928 and raised in Mount Vernon, Ohio. She excelled in the arts, classical piano, ballet, and horseback riding. She attended Columbus Schools for Girls (Ohio) and graduated Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. She married Brad Williams in 1949. Ann pursued jazz singing, first locally, by 1960 in NY City. In 1961 she recorded the classic "First Time Out" for MGM Records, w/Clark Terry and other notables. She appeared live in NY w/guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Ellis Larkins. Her single "Cheating on Me" received national airplay. Appearances on radio and tv included the Mike Douglas Show. A supporter of jazz artists in NY, Ann carried her passion to San Diego in the mid-seventies, and was active in the SD Jazz Society, helping to bring her NY associates to West Coast audiences. Over the years, Ann attended numerous local jazz events, and encouraged many musicians. She is survived by her son, jazz drummer Jeff Williams of NY and London. Before Ann fell and took ill in March, she was finding great joy in singing and recording again, after a decades long hiatus. She was exercising her voice daily and took great pleasure in revisiting old standards which
she loved as one does dear, old, familiar friends.

She loved sharing her music.

She was a woman of wisdom and intuition and loved to help educate people about the music she loved, Jazz.

She had taken a very special trip "back home" to Ohio and saw some treasured friends there.

She was a dear friend to Jon and me, we love her and we miss her.

Our greatest hope is that Ann is at peace.
