James Matt Cowan - 1958 - 2018. James Matt Cowan of Eugene, Oregon, and previously of Templeton, California, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. Jim, whom many affectionately knew as "Packy," was born on September 5, 1958, in Eugene to James "Wade" and Kathleen "Kitty" (Edmunds) Cowan. Jim graduated in 1976 from Springfield High School in Springfield, Oregon, where he served as Treasurer on the student council, played on the Varsity Golf Team, played trumpet in the school band, and was inducted as a member of the National Honor Society. He later briefly attended the University of Oregon. Jim married Marla McKay in 1983 and they moved to Bakersfield, California, prior to settling in Templeton, where they raised two sons. For many years, Jim was a well-known loan officer and Executive Vice President for Santa Lucia Bank on the Central Coast of California. Jim had a love of golf that saw him frequent the courses of Eugene/Springfield and San Luis Obispo County whenever he wasn't cheering on his favorite pros on television. His banking career, which spanned more than three decades, led him through every rank from sweeping floors as a teenager to Executive Vice President at the pinnacle of his professional achievement. Jim also took pride in his community involvement through the Templeton Education Foundation and NCI Affiliates. Jim had a special place in his heart for the sunny landscape of northern SLO County, an affection which was eclipsed only by the adoration he held for his family and, in his final years, his grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his father and his brother Michael Cowan. He is survived by his mother, his former wife, and his oldest son, Scott Cowan of Eugene; his brother, Thomas (Debbie) Cowan of Springfield; his youngest son, Garrett (Shandi) Cowan and their children, Asher and Coza Cowan of Templeton; and numerous other family and friends throughout the West Coast. Jim was remembered privately among family and friends in Eugene.
