Verna Belle Gladstone, age 91, passed away May 11, 2018, in San Luis Obispo. Verna was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska to Wilhelm and Lena Kirchmann, growing up on a farm with brother Norman and sister Rocille. In what became a life-long desire to travel, she began her journey by moving to California in her early 20's. There, she met her husband of 20 years and father of her two children, Sam Gladstone. They raised their children in Santa Monica. In the 1970's Verna worked for the State of Calif, eventually moving to Sacramento until, at age 50, she joined the U.S. Dept of State. She served as a Foreign Service Secretary for 15 years. While serving at six different embassies, Verna explored and appreciated the rich cultures, countries, and continents of India, Asia, Europe and Africa. Verna moved to San Luis Obispo in 1998, where she continued to travel, and to enjoy her vibrant social life and love of theater and movie-going. Verna ushered at Cal Poly PAC, acted as docent at The Jack House and worked for the SLO school district. Verna treasured her children, nieces and nephews, and their families. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Allan); and son, Larry (Lisa); grand- children: Danny (Corinne), Robert (Danielle) and Mollie; and great-grandsons: Dylan and Oliver. A Celebration of Verna's Life will be hosted by her daughter's family on June 16th in SLO.
