Bill Spong Obituary
Bill Spong
Sept. 27, 1924 - Oct. 21, 2017
Santa Cruz
Bill Timothy Spong, a longtime resident of Santa Cruz county, passed peacefully in his sleep and went to be with the Lord on Saturday the 21st, October 2017. He was 93.
Bill enjoyed several years living at Brookdale retirement community in Scotts Valley, cracking jokes and passing out chocolates to the staff and residents there.
He was born in Kingston Mines, Illinois to Roy and Mona Spong. He was married to Dorothy Suzanne Hickey and had 6 children, 20 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren.
A charming and extroverted man who was always ready for something new, Bill found work in dozens of fields including bricklayer, high rise iron worker, deliveryman for several bakeries and Santa Cruz dairy farms, restaurant manager at Foster Freeze, and owner of Diamonds Restaurant in Santa Cruz. One job he always spoke of with fondness was property manager at the Benedictine Monastery at Mount Angel in Oregon.
He was a man not defined by his job, but by his work, and his work was to constantly be at the service of any that might need his assistance. This personal trajectory of his took many forms, but his most consistent role may have been at the Saint Frances Soup Kitchen where he volunteered for over 25 years. Other volunteer roles in which he found himself include orphanages in Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, Habitat for Humanity, and the La Selva Beach Volunteer Fire Department.
Anyone who met him instantly knew he was a man defined by his capacity to connect with other humans. Even up to the very end he left everyone he met with the gentle glow of having met a truly loving person.
Contributions can be made to the St. Francis Soup Kitchen in Santa Cruz.
