JOHN KEITH MORTENSON, 84, died on January 10, 2019 in Salem, Oregon. John is survived by his wife Nancy Mortenson, daughters, Andrea Cox and Alexa Claybon, step son, Francesco Brown, and grandchildren, Allaura Cox, Christopher Cox, Hazel Claybon and Edith Claybon. John was born on August 29, 1934 in Monterey, California to Norvin and Erna Mortenson and was raised in Monterey. John attended Monterey High School and graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1957 with a B.A. in Political Science. At U.C. Berkeley, John was a member of the ROTC, crew team, and Kappa Alpha fraternity. John served in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer from 1957 to 1963 in active duty and in the reserves. John received a MBA from Santa Clara University before becoming the personnel manager for U.C. Santa Cruz as it opened in 1965. John raised his three daughters, Christina Mortenson (dec. Oct. 9, 1991), Andrea and Alexa in Santa Cruz and was an active member of the business community and of St. John's Episcopal Church in Capitola, California. John married Nancy on May 30, 1986, and they lived in Santa Cruz, California until moving to Salem, Oregon in 2005. In Salem, John was an active member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, the Rotary Club, and the Marion County Master Gardeners Association. John was an Eagle Scout, and had lifelong passions for camping, fishing, tennis, skiing, reading, history, travel, and generously contributing his time and many talents to the communities he lived in. John's family would like to thank the Salem Hospital's intermediate care unit for their kindness and tender care in the last days of John's life. A funeral service for John will be held at Prince of Peace Episcopal Church on February 23, 2019. The family suggests that memorials in John's name be made to the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church's Memorial Fund ([email protected]) or to the Marion-Polk Food Share (www.marionpolkfoodshare.org).
