Karlene Faith Obituary

Karlene Faith
1938 - May, 2017
Vancouver, B.C.
Karlene Faith died in Vancouver, B.C., on May 15, 2017, surrounded by family.
Professor Emeritus in the School of Criminology, in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, Karlene obtained her PhD in the History of Consciousness program at UCSC in 1981, and commenced her career the next year at SFU.
Karlene, named as the first child of the family, by her minister father, after Karl Marx and Karl Barth, was born in central Canada, and grew up in that region, back and forth across the border into Montana, and North and South Dakota. Life took her on adventures, living for significant periods in France, northern Ethiopia (now Eritrea), and to Santa Cruz in 1966, arriving with her four young children.
Karlene started working with women in prison while an undergrad at UCSC, an interest and concern that remained with her to her death. She also played a large role in developing the Santa Cruz Women's Prison Project in 1972. Karlene is the author of 12 books, many on the above subject, dozens of articles and book reviews, and many dozens of papers presented to conferences. She is internationally recognized as a feminist/activist.
The Santa Cruz Memorial for Karlene will be on July 22, 2017, at 2:00 PM, at the Resource Center for Nonviolence at 612 Ocean Street. Please contact Brian Murtha for any clarification.
