Leland Whittaker (Lee) Bariteau Obituary
Leland (Lee) Whittaker Bariteau
Sept. 19, 1958 - Mar. 23, 2018
Resident of Scotts Valley
After a brief but intense battle with a rare form of cancer, Lee passed away on March 23 at the early age of 59. His gentle spirit, positive outlook, and love of life will be sorely missed by all of those who had the privilege to know him.
A life-long resident of Santa Cruz, Lee attended Brook Knoll Elementary, Scotts Valley Middle School and graduated from Harbor High in 1976. He attended Cabrillo College earning his AA degree. After he graduated, Lee joined his father in the family business, Bariteau's Linen Supply and Cleaners. Lee and his brother Barry purchased the business from their father, continuing the 110 year old family business. Bariteau's has been in its current location since 1957, a fact of which Lee was very proud.
Lee grew up around golf. He made Pasatiempo and Delaveaga Golf Courses his playgrounds; spending hours golfing, scavenging for golf balls, working and gathering with friends. Lee played on his high school and college golf teams, was a member of the Delaveaga Men's Club and Nor Cal Players Club. His love/hate relationship with golf continued through his life. He enjoyed weekend outings and golf trips, along with 9-hole weekly outings after work that he referred to as his work-out regiment.
Lee loved spending time with his family, including camping and ski trips, attending school athletic and other events, and faithfully going to the Friday Night Concerts at the Boardwalk.
Lee was most happy hanging out at home with his family and friends. Sunday morning breakfast for his kids and their friends was one of his specialties. If no family events were planned, Lee would immerse himself in his numerous remodel, repair projects, and Valerie's Honey-do List around his home.
The consummate hosts, Lee and Valerie loved to entertain at their home and hosted many a party including 4th of July celebrations, Monday Night Football, Bariteau's Brewers softball team bashes, staff and other special celebrations and many lazy weekend pool parties.
A devoted and loving husband and father, Lee leaves behind Valerie, his wife of 29 years; children Kyle, Blaine, Brielle and Camille; brothers Patrick (Elaine) and Barry, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Eli and Sharon Bariteau and brother Stephen.
A celebration of life will be on Saturday, April 21 at Delaveaga Golf Course in Santa Cruz, at 3pm.
Memorial donations in Lee's name can be made to The Eli Bariteau-Bob Schultz Junior Golf Scholarship Fund at 620 Water Street, Santa Cruz, 95060.
